Recommend quality 70mm fan?

A place to talk about GPUs/Motherboards/CPUs/Cases/Remotes, etc.

Recommend quality 70mm fan?

#1

Post by EmirOfGroofunkistan » Mon Jun 27, 2011 11:34 pm

I just put together a new HTPC using a lian li PC-C37 case http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/pr ... dex=63&g=f

They use a bit of an odd sized fan - 70mm x 15mm, and provide two. I'd like to buy one or two more of the case fans, unfortunately, lian li doesn't sell that size fan on their website (nor do they return any emails). Does anyone know of quiet, well made fans of this size?

thanks,
james

Yup, 70mm is a little odd. A 60mm is a little more common, but a 80mm is widely available. Being that you are looking for a fan with specific attributes, I would consider fabricating four tabs so that I could mount a different size fan.

This is overkill, but you get the idea.

Wow, that chassis' fan vent hole configuration must block at least 50% of the air flow, not to mention increase noise. I don't mean to dis the case, as it looks great, but I wish designers would include cooling in their designs, and not add it as an afterthought.

Is your plan to replace the existing fans or just have some spare?

When I bought my D-Vine 4, I dremeled out the fan chassis grills and added some of these:

The fans don't spin as hard trying to force air though, more air is expelled and the whole system got much quieter.

@stonethecrows, why do you say the vent holes would block half of the airflow? Do you mean the metal between the holes blocks more airflow than the grills that you added?

Yes. Basically there is a lot of chassis metal in the way in between those holes.

I should add, that this is only 'my' way of dealing with air flow. Your case may perform adequately well without you having to hack the thing to pieces!

once I (more) carefully rerouted all of the cables the heat hasn't been too bad. The MB chipset gets a little warm (38C) but not terrible. Now I'm mostly concerned about balancing heat vs noise. I may consider making larger holes in the side ... but I'd rather try other fans as a first option. I would have chosen a different case, but I had a 5.5" height requirement.

I think now I'm mostly playing around here and there buying time before my HDHomerun prime is delivered...
