Have you tried Haali Media Splitter? I use it along with a registry edit to allow Media Center to play .mkv files natively.

It's not to play MP4/M4v, WMC does that natively. However, it won't let you ffwd or skip chapters; you can only do the 30 skip ahead.

Looking at the profiles in MCE Buddy, they are basically just command lines for the encoder. I am clueless though as to how to make them do what I want. Here is an example:

Hmmm interesting, I know Media Browser pulled metadata for my DVD rips but since converting them to DVR-MS haven't seen any metadata pulled down for those - maybe I need to check my config settings in MB...

Exactly, if only it were that easy and standard across the board for everyone. :-/ It took me quite a few trial and errors to get it right. I finally started out simple with as few changes as possible until things were playing zippy fast, smooth, and reliable for all formats.

Can you use NERO and convert it to another format.. Or maybe even handbrake?

I did not try Nero. I was able to go back to where the video was take and the security software came AVI Converter which worked.

By definition, bitstreaming does not require any codecs to be installed on the PC, as bitstreaming means outputting encoded audio from the PC to a receiver. With something like anydvdhd/dvdfabpasskeylite, LAV filters, mediaplayerclassic and mediacentrestudio, yes.
LAV allows playing of the main movie...

And is your resolution set to an interlaced one or low frequency? Should be 50 or 60Hz for the US Et al.

A no nonsense way to get subtitles and seperate audio tracks working in media center along with mymovies.

Easiest and cheapest is shark codec, uninstall bing toolbar, go into the settings in admin and go to audio and set it on the right to pass throughh all of the hd formats. If youre x64 youll need to go into the lav settings and check off all of the dts formats.

At that point all formats will work...

I haven't tried it, but I'm sure if you google convert avi to wtv or convert avi to dvr-ms , you will find something. There are probably others here on this forum with experience too.

well there we go. AVR doesn't support beyond DTS so it'd be pointless to try and send anything higher. it also seems that when i rip a bluray with the TrueHD sound track i am made to alsoinclude a 5.1 soundtrack or the rip fails

Maybe convert to h.264 wtv (assuming you are recording mpeg-2 streams)?
You will lose quality whenever you convert between codecs but h.264 is a good trade off, you'll need to try a few bitrates to find a balance you're happy with.
