Hello,
My windows media center collection is about 6TB now and I need a better backup solution. I am leaning towards the Synology DS413J or DS413 using their hybrid raid and 4 x 4TB hard drives. Any and all suggestions would be very much appreciated.
I am decently familiar with traditional...

hi,
I would like to set up network storage for my home to store recorded TV and other videos from my library. Some of the videos are irreplacable and I would like to have some kind of backup setup (RAID 1 I was thinking) and I leave my HTPC on all of the time. I have 3 basic ideas
1. install 2...

- Will WMC go back to sleep/hibernation after recording finishes?
The answer is yes to all three questions.
For most of 2012 I used sleep with my HTPC, but for some reason as yet undiagnosed, since the...

So I used to run WHS v1, then I participated in Vail beta, then upgraded to WHS 2011 and was all fine and happy as I love the products not only for storage, but also for the client PC backups.
So 2012 wasn't a great year. I first had 1 of my Raid 10 drives fail, then the main OS drive failed, and...

I am considering the same thing, but I have some questions about Server first...

Hi
I just built a home server for storage/media streaming to home htpcs. I record a lot up to 24 hrs a day and I would prefer to have only one machine on 24/7.
With windows 8 I know I can do WMC to record tv and home group/networking and play to to share and stream.
I have never used any home...

If 95 percent of my recordings are on one low-def channel and you're mainly using Live TV, then I'm not sure why WMC is even relevant for your needs. it sounds like it'd be cheaper to just get basic STBs from your cable company, and maybe Roku's or WDTVs for any stored media.

I have a short rack so I'm looking for something rack mountable.
Also wondering if the hardware sold on Monoprice is decent. I've gotten cables from them but never something like a switch.

I personally like the low-end Dell PowerConnect (2808, 2816, 2824 2848) for home use - they have basic management functions and cost about the same as unmanaged switches when on sale.

Ok so I have been using the 2 tb Seagate go flex desktop as my backup drive
However, I have gone through 4 of them now.
They work for awhile and then eventually it seems like they burnout from overheating.
What external drive would you guys recommend to use as a backup drive....
Thanks

Pull the drives out of enclosures and put them in a NAS or case, and make sure they are well ventilated.

Looks good. I agree about running wires in the walls is good for WAF.
Is that a Comcast Cable Box in the pic? Why not get rid of it?
I kept it just for the WAF, but now she is getting comfortable with the HTPC (she uses it more than I do)
I'll return it this weekend.

I have tried junctions and dfs to no avail. I do have a SAN Server, but that can't make an iSCSI drive out of a physical disk....
