HDMI Video Card

#1

Post by jagrime2 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 2:05 pm

I bought a new receiver last month that allows HDMI pass-through so I can listen to tv using the tv speakers and my surround sound setup for movies/music. However I was having problems getting my DTS audio to properly work. After a month of frustration I finally determined that my onboard audio through HDMI only supports 2.0 sound. So I now have my video running through HDMI and my audio running through my SPDIF, which is how I had my setup with my old receiver!!!!! I need to find a HDMI output source that will transmit full HD audio, I am assuming that newer video cards/motherboards support this but wanted to get feedback before dropping the $$$.

Any suggestions?

Evga NVIDIA GT430. Love mine has HDMI out and supports all the HD audio formats.
Also...Do you have AC3 Filter installed? if so there are some settings you need to set in it for passthrough.. check this thread http://www.thegreenbutton.tv/forums/vie ... f=32&t=433
From looking at your Mobo specs i do NOT see anything saying it supports True HD or DTS HD.. you can get this support by adding the video card above if thats the DTS you are trying to play.

Here's a link to that boards specs - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM ... ifications

And the codec specs here - http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/audio ... el/vt1708/

It plainly states that the VIA HD Audio codecs enable support the latest 7.1 channel, 24-bit, 192KHz audio content

Maybe the content you are playing back is 2.0

I also use nvidia gt430 and love it. I am using LAV splitter with mpc hc for lossless audio.

From what I can tell the MB only supports 7.1 sound through the dedicated multi-channel outputs (which I guess are okay for a small speaker set). The SPDIF supports up to 5.1 sound (I think that is a limitation on the SPDIF not the software) and the HDMI only supports 2.0 sound based on the onboard ATI 4000 series video. From reading up it seems that to get 7.1 channel through-put on an HDMI you need to have a minimum ATI 5000 series video card or for full 3D you need a 6000 series.

My only concern with having a video card is the fan noise. While I would love the potential of the gt430, for basic tv/movie watching I am thinking about a fanless solution.

I have Shark007 set up to pass through sound, but it only works through the SPDIF. When I watch a Blu-ray rip through SPDIF I get 5.1 sound; however if I switch to HDMI output I get silence. I have tried MC settings, Win7 settings and driver settings all to no avail. I just ordered a new video card and hopefully that will solve my sound issue. I will post back with the results.

I know the 430 has a fan but it only runs when it gets warm. Its so small.. I NEVER hear it.. It has never been an issue with noise with this card, highly recommend this one. Some of the other ATI cards have issues with the 59/29 bug and the GT 430 seems to not exhibit this behavior as bad a others ..just FYI.. I have had my card for approx a year with no issues.
