Could you rename the file c:\programdata\garyan2\epg123\images\imagecache.json to imagecache_old.json and start the service again? This is the second time I've seen this reported and would be helpful to know if it in the json or trying to read an image file.

If it still doesn't start/work, just change or delete the images folder.

I'm pleased to report renaming imagecache.json with a .old extension allowed the service to start successfully, and images are starting to appear in the guide listings again.

Let me know if I can provide any additional diagnostics to help crack this issue.

In case it helps, when I try to parse the old images json file with Firefox, it reports --
SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data

RE: sfc system file integrity violations

I just re-installed Win 7 Pro 64 on my DVR that had not been rebuilt since 2018. To isolate any sfc error causes, I ran sfc /scannow and created a restore point after every step before proceeding to the next. I made it all the way to a complete windows install, all updates plus my anti-malware and maintenance utilities leaving WMC setup and EPG123 for last. Then I received my first sfc scan error after tweaking WMC from the EPG client GUI. So I restored back and then paid very close attention to each tweak option’s scan results, my findings are below.

Both the EPG configuration and main EPG client were benign, but any WMC Tweak options in the left column (those that require clicking the update button) will trigger a change in the ownership and modification date of C:\Windows\ehome\Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll. All the right column options do not, as long as you don’t click update, they save on their own, except Set Recordings Filename Pattern that has its own set button. Since Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll is a system file that is not to be modified, it will now cause a sfc scan error. Apparently unavoidable, because WMC really needs to be tweaked! Recorded TV HD and Media Center Studio also modify Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll. This trio is necessary to the quality of my WMC experience!

Being clever, I tried changing the system clock to the original file’s date down to the minute and restored the ownership back to NT Service\TrustedInstaller, but to no avail. SFC compares the whole file to the one in its store, not just those details. I tried swapping a virgin Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll file in before a sfc scan, but still returned a hash mismatch! So I must live with the sfc scan errors, but how to sort that out should one not be related to Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll? In my research I discovered that you can open and clear the CBS.log found in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS by adding your login profile name to its security permissions with full control. That way you will have far less data to muck through after a sfc scan. There is also a data filter command that will mine down to just what you need to see. I created a bat file to do that and named it, “Open sfc scan details.bat”. Copy the following in a txt file and rename its file extension to .bat and run it as administrator.

So if I want to run sfc /scannow, I clear CBS.log before the scan, then run Open sfc scan details.bat and click Ctrl+F and type “Cannot” to flag just the stuff sfc could not fix. Any corrupt files not related to Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll are now your focus to be repaired or whatever, and a “corrupted” Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll is as it should be for a better WMC experience!

I hope someone will find this information useful.

Question: Any issues with daylight savings time? I thought I ran into a problem with DST several years ago. My channel guide listings are mixed up. Station numbers not the same as what they were. Do I need to post a log? Thank you.

No issues with DST... everything in guide listings is GMT. Not sure about your station numbers. Too many possibilities, like downloading the correct lineup, having multiple lineups and the wrong one being matched to the guide, lineup is wrong (check https://tvlistings.zap2it.com/).

Your first place to look is the client to see what lineup channels are being mapped to your tuner channels.

I started getting errors on the EPG download on the morning of 6/4, and now I get the same error daily. To fix errors in the past I have updated to the most recent stable version, but I am already on version 1.7.3.0. Note I run two line-ups, one cable and one OTA-

The only weird thing I see on the 4th is that some channels were removed.

I opened the client GUI and saw in the logs where activating the GUI deleted those bad channels from 6/4. Then I did a successful client update. Back to Green.

Good morning Gary,

I was on EPG123 18.0.0 and the update status "Green TV" icon did have some issues but I knew that you would get around to fixing it overtime because you always do - thank you!

This morning, I noticed my scheduled program data refresh did not run successfully so I opened EPG123, click the link to your site and downloaded the latest, 18.0.5. I always use the installer version and all installed as normal. So I did a "Clean Cache", then "Save & Execute". The program runs the first step of 10(?) then quit. I tried it a couple of times, same result. I tired clicking on the previous versions of EPG123 on your site but they did not lead to a previous version download, so I restored my PC and it has now 18.0.0 installed. Now 18.0.0 has the same issue - program opens, runs 1 of 10 steps, then quits.

Hope you will find a solution to this soon and thank you again for all your great work!

It's been so long since there was an issue, I honestly can't remember specific behavior.

The status logo is put in the MXF file and is then loaded in to the WMC database by the EPG123 client. In this case, since the EPG123 update didn't create a new MXF file, it couldn't put the status logo in there. In this situation, I would think you would only get a non-green logo if the old MXF file was more than 24 hours old. You would see a log entry like so if that was the case:

Also, the "xx:yy" in the timestamp seems weird, although I'm guessing that might be an edit you made to the log before posting it.

Not quite. There are 2 possible status logo locations. There is the brandLogo (selectable by 'Add status logo in channel guide (viewable by extenders)' option and will appear in the guide view in WMC. This logo is embedded in the MXF file.

The other is the OEMLogo which is viewable on the WMC homepage and is created by the client after an MXF update. It will be based on a status code in the MXF file if there were any warnings or an update is available, as well as if the client was successful importing the file. If the MXF file was older than 24 hours, meaning the creation was unsuccessful, it will be red.

Of course, I guess there is also the tray notification that will change color based on the above client results.

Thanks, guys. Clearly my lobotomy was, at least marginally, successful. :?

On 1st failure, clearly status was not reflected in .mxf, as it was not (re)created. But also begs the question, why didn't the tray icon reflect the failure (also green)?

If the previous successful import of the mxf file was created less than 24 hours ago, it will still be green. Only after 24 hours will it turn red on its own assuming the server failed to create a new file.

I guess the gist of my post was to indicate that if EPG123 fails to create a new MXF file for any reason, then the EPG123 client will not change the color of the status logo in WMC due to this failure.

The only way the status logo changes in this situation is if the EPG123 client fails to load the old MXF file successfully (which would be unrelated to the failure to create the newer MXF file) or it loads it successfully and it was created more than 24 hours from the time it was loaded.

So this means after a successful load of the MXF file, you could have EPG123 attempt to do a new update every hour, and if it fails to create a new MXF file every time for some reason (such as a problem with the SchedulesDirect server, as was the case here), it will not change the color of the status logo until 24 hours has past since the last time the MXF file WAS successfully created (or it fails to reload the old MXF file for some reason).

My understanding for the reason it is this way is due to the fact that the only way STATUS is passed on from the EPG123 update (the part that downloads the guide from SchedulesDirect and creates the MXF file) to the EPG123 client (the part that loads the MXF file in to WMC and sets the color of the status logo) is through the MXF file. So obviously, if a new MXF file is not created, there is no way to pass on this status information.

Note that if there are other issues/errors with updating the guide, but they are not severe enough to result in the MXF file not being created, then the status logo WILL change color based on the severity of the error when that MXF file is loaded (there is no 24 hour wait in this circumstance).

NP IMO the mechanism is sound & I was just being dense. A single missed update is pretty meaningless when there are ~2 wks+ of guide data "in the bank". In that context, not much benefit to hammering the SD servers w/ retries. IF the problem persists, it becomes apparent long before data runs out, assuming one is paying attention, & will be investigated/diagnosed/resolved.

i got the same ^^ at 4:15 AM yesterday (6/25/2023). tried several manual updates, but the exact same results kept on occurring.

today (6/26/2023), 15 minuets ago, at 1:15 AM, just ran a manual update and all is AOK again. :)

so it was on SD's end and they fixed it i guess.

I keep getting errors that "Token has expired". I'm not sure what is causing that, but I was also not getting all program data sometimes. I updated to the latest version 1.8.0.6 and ran it manually this morning with the same errors and after checking the lineups on schedules direct and in the configuration GUI (without changing anything), I ran it again and it worked as far as getting the program descriptions, but still gives errors getting artwork. It's been doing this for a while now, but I don't care much about the artwork as long as I get the program descriptions and I can record my shows, I'm good.

Still I'd like to fix this, in case it cause other issues.
