Automatic guide download not working

#1

Post by nikleb » Sat Aug 15, 2015 1:45 pm

I have an issue that started over a year ago. Although, I have setup my guide to automatically download new guides I sopped doing so over a year ago.
Basically, I get a pop-up window when the guide has 3 days or less left and asks me to download.
Someone suggested a while back that going through a full TV setup would fix it. Well, due to the recent MS guide switch issues I went through a full TV setup. I did not resolve the issue.
My guide is scheduled to download during the night.

How can I fix it?

Try the following.

1] Remove WMC from Windows Program Features.
2] Restart the computer to release the eHome directory and allow its deletion.
3] Delete or rename the \ProgramData\microsoft\eHome directory.
4] Add WMC in Windows Program Features again.
5] Rerun the WMC install wizard.

If you are concerned your zip code may not have epg data, then enter your zip code and signal type at http://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/tv-listings .
If you get a valid TV Schedule for your signal type the above solution should work for you. Rovi uses the same data.
My system is Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center using a Hauppage TV-HR-1600 "Over The Air" (OTA) digital ATSC capture card on a digital HD TV antenna.
I found that removing and reinstalling WMC was not enough. There must be some config data left in the eHome directory since removing the directory allows a reinstall to succeed.
If you want a step by step document I have posted it at the MS bug report site for WMC at https://connect.microsoft.com/site1145/ ... ls/1665722

Thanks for the post. Good to know I ma not the only one with the issue.
But reinstalling the entire MC seems a bit drastic. I would need to setup all my plugins, guide,.. again.

Trying a second attempt in resolving this issue.
Still having the issue that MC doe no longer download the guide automatically. Manually works. All my settings are correct for an automatic download.
Does anyone know of other things I could try/debug?

Today, I decided to open the Windows TaskScheduler to see if there is a task scheduled for the guide update.
I was greeted with the following error: "Task mcupdate_scheduled: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with". Does this have anything to do with it? How can I fix this error?

Yes, that is the task that does the daily guide update. It is created and maintained by Windows Media Center.

I believe you can delete the corrupt task and WMC will recreate it. Try this:

1) Exit Windows Media Center.
2) Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Media Center
3) Delete the file associated with the task that is corrupted (mcupdate_scheduled) (send it to the trashcan just in case you need to restore it).
4) Restart Windows Media Center.

It should recreate the task and it should no longer be corrupted. If it does not recreate it, go to Settings->General-> Automatic Download Options and uncheck the
"Automatically download Windows Media Center databetween..." item. Select "Save", then go back and re-check it and "Save" again.

If this doesn't fix it, you can try to create the task manually, just do a Google search and you should find how to do it.

Thanks. I deleted the file, MC recreated. Task Scheduler is happy.
Hopefully, this cures the not working automatic download finally.

I wanted to wait with the reply to make sure I got 3 weeks running.
And yes, deleting the corrupt task in the scheduler fixed the automatic guide download that I was seeing.
