WMC won't keep my recorder storage settings

#1

Post by Billyray520 » Fri Feb 27, 2015 10:09 pm

I have been trying to set up my HTPC which has one ssd (C: system drive) and a hdd (D: storage drive) so that it doesn't use the C: drive, or if it MUST use that drive, only to use 25 GB (apparently the least setting possible) But when I set my hdd for 500 GB limit, it switches it back to 800! This is a 1 TB drive. Why won't WMC just let me keep the settings? :?:

Never heard of that setting before. You can only record to C: or D: Not both. Even if D: is full you can't just overflow into 25 GB's of C:

By the way, these TV files are huge. Superbowl is 24 GB, a movie is 11-12 GB, a half hour show is 4-5 GB. You can eat a hard drive pretty quick with WMC 5-6 Gigs an hour-Per Tuner. If you can spare it, give the old girl about 80% of the drive. Save the other 20% for a System Image of your C.

I'm not sure if this is the right way or the wrong way but it is my way.

1- First thing I did was I went to D: using Win7's file explorer, and created a new folder named Recorded TV (yes, Upper Case and spaces, just like you see it)While your at it, you might as well make a couple more folders and name them Music and Movies
2- Then open up WMC and go to Tasks/Settings/TV/Recorder/Recorder Storage. If you click the + this allows you to choose your C or D drive. Choose D-your 1 TB drive.
3-In Maximum TV limit I chose 1600 GB a bit less than max. You should be able to choose 500 if you want. I don't know why you are being forced to use 800. Just use 800 for now.
4- Click Save and Back your way out of there.
5- Open up Win7's file explorer again, and go to D:\Recorded TV. You will see a new folder named TempSWMC. This means you have succeeded. When you record something the unfinished recording will be inside the TempSWMC folder and WMC will automatically move it when it is complete.

Oh, my bad..
I didn't know you could only use 1 drive. I set up my Storage Drive (D:) to use 650 GB, and it seems to be keeping. I have set up a test to record 3 shows at once in a few minutes. I will see how that goes.

Thanks Crash for all of the extra info! I need just this kind of help..

One more question: If I record to the D:drive, will my WMC extender have access to recorded shows too?

Your extender will be able to watch anything your computer can watch. Including Live TV

Where are you at with the extender? What brand, how is it connected, is it working? Tell us a bit about it.

Unfortunately, the Ceton Echo which I purchased seems to be defective. I plugged it into the TV with supplied HDMI cable, connected the Ethernet cable and the power cable. I have the lights on "Ceton" but I get no output to the TV. It is supposed to display a number for me to input into the WMC HTPC. The HTPC is waiting for me to input the number, but the Echo will not come on to the TV. I tried resetting power, on/off, different cables, different HDMI port on the TV, checked connections, etc. Nothing will make the Echo display to the TV the numbers I need. I guess I will be shipping it back on Monday.

You didn't mention this.....TV HDMI inputs.....What HDMI input is the TV set to? What HDMI input is the Echo plugged in to?

It could be a dud too. It has been known to happen.

I guess we might as well move on to the next one while you are waiting for an extender replacement. This next one will share your Recorded TV with the rest of your network.

Go to WMC/Settings/Media Library/Recorded TV/Add folders to the library/On this computer/click the + beside your D/and put a checkmark beside Recorded TV.

Remember those two folders I asked you to add earlier.....Music and Movies? I realize there is nothing in those folders yet, but there will be. Do the same thing to Music and Movies that we just did ^^^^^
Go to WMC/Settings/Media Library/Music/Add folders to the library/On this computer/click the + beside your D/and put a checkmark beside Music.

The idea here is to get the data off the C: drive. This keeps C: fast, and makes it quicker to backup and restore. An added bonus is that all your Recorded TV, Music, and Movies have just been shared on your network.
