Cannot Connect Locally with Win 8

#1

Post by choliscott » Wed Feb 25, 2015 9:36 am

Hi Everyone,

My WMC machine runs Win 7 & trying to connect using MMC on both a Win 8.1 PC (hard wired) & a tablet (also using Win 8.1). When I try to scan for computers on the pc, it's able to find (quickly) the location of the computer running MMC, however the tablet cannot find the computer. When I try to connect, it says it's unable to connect & when I manually add in the ip address on the tablet, it's also unable to connect.

Has anybody seen this & if so, do you know what the fix is? I check the port forward in the MMC setup & it said everything was ok, & I'm also able to connect (from the cell network) using my Android phone.

Thanks

Do you have more than one Wifi network? Try connecting the tab to the other one.

On mine I have Regular Wifi and Guest Wifi. If my tab is connecting on the Guest network, it wont be able to get to my Win7, unless these 2 Isolation switches are turned off. In my router the switches are located in the Guest Wifi configuration section. I have 2 Regular (2.4 and 5.0 GHZ) and 2 Guest (2.4 and 5.0 GHZ) yours may be similar. What kind of Tab do you have?

Even if the above is true, you should still be able to take the Tab out on the internet and then come back in through the firewall and connect with MMC. Unless something else is up?

Your tab should be configured to connect to both your internal as well as your external Ip of the Win7 box.

example 192.168.1.13:5832/98.98.98.98:5832 just like your phone.

I have two WIFI networks (one is 2.4 ghz & the other is 5 Ghz), & what's funny is that the tablet doesn't see the 5 Ghz one (My router does have a guest network, but I have that shut off)

The tablet is an HP Stream 8.

What's funny is my desktop (running W8.1 & hard wired can't connect using the W8 MMC app also)

I just looked up your Tab. It has a 802.11b/g/n radio. It should be able to connect to the 5 GHZ wifi. Maybe the 5 GHZ is set to not broadcast SSID (like my picture Hide SSID)? Also known as Invisible SSID.

Open up the wifi connections on the tab and setup a manual connection (or an Other Connection) to the 5 GHZ SSID and password. you should be able to look that up in the router.

The wifi on it does some strange stuff. I don't get the limited connection, but it will act like it has no connection (it shows it's still connected). I even tried connecting using the data plan I have on it & same result.

Forget the wifi then and come in through the external IP.

In other words disable wifi to force 3g or 4g or whatever, and hook up with MMC through the external IP if the Win7 box.

I think all you would need is a port forward in the router.

That's just it, the router is configured correctly, as my android cell phone has no problems connecting remotely.

I never really understood all this port forwarding crap until I completed the Remote Desktop Project. Microsoft explains it so well. You might need to forward the adjacent ports for the tab

On the Win7 box click start/help/ type in Remote Desktop. you will be port forwarding everything after that one.

Might be some Internet Security on the tab preventing you from going where you want to go.

I think the best advice is to throw the problem at HP, and if they can't make it work, throw it back at them.

I'll have to look at the remote desktop link tomorrow. What I don't get is my W8 desktop machine (that is hard wired) can get the internal/external IP address of the WMC machine, but also can't connect

If you suspect the Win8 box is preventing the connection of the tab, Remove it from the network.

Might be the "Master Browser Problem" I forget how I eliminated that problem from my network.

Is this what you suspect?

It appears to me, MyRouter (RT-N56U), is the MasterBrowser. At least, at this point in time.

Another place that might help you figure it out is EventViewer. Looks like I had some errors last September. As I said before though, I don't remember what I did, if anything.

EDIT: That rings a bell. One of the kids installed a router RT-ACN56U last Sept. I configured it to be an AP and the browser errors went away. MyRouter has a similar name RT-N56U (non AC)

Ok, when I try the Netstat on my hard wired computers, the only one that showed the MSBROWSE Group, was on the WMC machine & looks like it was under the Ceton Infinitv6 IP Address

C:\Users\TV>nbtstat -a TV-PC

Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.0.5] Scope Id: []

NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
TV-PC <00> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <00> GROUP Registered
TV-PC <20> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered

MAC Address =

Local Area Connection 2:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.200.2] Scope Id: []

NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
TV-PC <00> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <00> GROUP Registered
TV-PC <20> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered
WORKGROUP <1D> UNIQUE Registered
..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered

MAC Address =

C:\Users\TV>

I did look at the event viewer yesterday evening, but I only looked at the MMC, but it didn't show a single entry (I was hoping it would show it was detecting something trying to happen). I will look later on at the admin events log & see if anything comes thru.

On a side note, the W8 Media Browser app has no problems connecting (I know this is apples to oranges)

Thanks I was just trying to compare apples to apples. Can you do a net view then nbstat -a for each device listed in net view and post it?

I'm hoping one of the pro's here see's something and can point out a fix for ya. I suspect you have a small network problem or the HP Tab is NFG. We ran into a similar dead end with a LG G3.

Here are some pages for you to read..... https://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=Ak ... t-710&fp=1
