Extender Issue

I am running WMC 7 on a 64 bit machine, using an Xbox 360 as an extender. Everything has been running perfect until yesterday. After I installed my new Verizon Quantum Gateway router I am having and extender problem. I can connect with no problem. I can watch TV and recorded shows with no problem. But if I pause, or go to the main screen and let it sit for a minute or two I loose connection. It disconnects and then reconnects on its own.
I have turned off the firewall, added permission rules to the router for the Xbox, and even removed and re added the extender nothing has worked.
Any ideas or suggestions?

check for and turn off green settings and/or sleep settings. there is also usually some sort of media streaming setting, look for it and enable.

There might be a flag set like "Reduce link speed during system idle" or "Reduce link speed during standby" or "Allow computer to turn off device to save power". You could try clearing those.

Your like the third person that has had issues with a verizon modem/router in the last month. Best solution is to get your own equipment preferably netgear or asus, you have better control and user experience and you don't have to rent it.

I was/am going to say the same thing. Your 1st mistake is using a "company" router. Get your own so you have control of your network.

I am fine with getting my own router, I wasn't aware that you could run Verizon Fios with another router. I will have to look into that.

Yeah you just have to disable the router and wifi function in the verizon. You can also buy your own cable modem too. Why pay rent?

If the router is interfering with traffic it might be a lot cheaper to just buy an unmanaged gigabit switch, hang that off the router and connect all your devices to the switch. (wireless would still go thru the router of course). Switches are pretty cheap can be had for about $25.

That's a good idea too. However if any of the devices plugged into the switch, want to go for a little trip to the internet, they would still have to get out/in permission from a company router. The problem is no control over firmware updates that might kill your traffic, if they so deemed it necessary.

It's obvious that "out of the box" they are all ready killing your local traffic.

But you are right about the switch being a 29 dollar quick fix for tonight.

I am already using a switch. I come out of the router to a switch then to all my devices. I used this with my old router because its a gigabit switch and the old Verizon router wasn't. When I set up the new router I just left the switch in place.

Just thumbing through the manual, one idea for ya is to check out the security log. Page 104 in the manual. When you reply to a post here you can use the CODE button to copy and paste the Security log here. There might be something in there that might point a finger at why the xbox is doing what its doing. Most if not all are the routers firewall blocking things from outside. The question is what to allow in and what not?

Can you go in to the log settings and set it to log everything?

This is great to have your very own built in packet sniffer. Most of us have to install Wireshark to get this type of info.

Do any of those events correspond with the times/dates that you had problems with the XBOX?

I see there are 6 different logs.

I thought I saw a place in the manual where you could tell the router what to log. Anyway make it log everything. then test out the xbox and make it do the problem that it has . go into the logs and see what was going on at the same time as the xbox. Setting the routers time is critical the time should be exactly the same as your HTPC. What we are looking for are all the things that are going on at the same time the XBOX is having a problem. You might even want to write down the times when the xbox is not working correctly.

another idea is.....If you have an extra laptop or phone you might even be able to view the log live while you are testing the xbox. There it is, just continually tap refresh and you will see the log live on your phone.
