An internal tuner in a small case is a bad idea. Not only because of space but also heat. It would be better to sell the card, and get an external tuner. Then you can get a really small case.

Well, you have to add up all the costs.

Apples to apples, a 3 TV setup with Tivo costs no less than, and potentially more than, a 3 TV setup with WMC.

Are you aware that the $150 Tivo saddles you with monthly obligations?

By using a PC based system, I save about $600/year over what Tivo or other cable or satellite DVR would cost for my 5 TV household. So, yes, buying a Tivo is the easiest option, but very expensive.

I just picked up a lease return HP E6200 small form factor business desktop off eBay for $160 shipped. It has an i3 chip and 4GB of RAM. It has 4 low profile slots (two of them are PCIe x1). I plan on installing two PCIe 6 cards and two 6TB drives in RAID 0. But if you just used it as it comes it would work fine. Just look for one with a decent sized HD.

I would be concerned about overheating in a small form factor case with 2 PCIe 6 cards and two large hard drives. I had to jury rig an additional fan in my small form factor case to blow directly on my PCIe 4 card to keep the temp within spec.

I am concerned about heat. Where the tuner cards are located there is plenty of airflow. The problem is its the hot air off of the CPU! See the picture.

What I'm thinking is that because the fan supplying the air is fairly large, it will provide enough flow to keep the temp down low enough for the tuners.

I used to have a very similar case and was able to just set an extra fan directly on top of my tuner card against the top vents. That controlled the temp quite nicely.

$150 TiVO with a $600 lifetime subscription is really a $750 TiVO.

its 150.00 for the tivo and 400.00 for lifetime subscription. so its 550.00

the tivo roamio has two things a ceton does not have. OTA tuners and only uses 14 watts of power.
I might go OTA only in the future since theres nothing but realty tv on cable now.

and i got my roku3

You can get an OTA tuner for $69. If you need 4 tuners get two. No monthly fee!

As far as Tivo, I used to be a huge fan. A month ago my family bought 2 of the Roamio's. One to be used with OTA and one cable. They also bought a Mini to go with one of them. I was very surprised at the bugs in the product. Tivo's attitude is "oh well!"

It made me feel much better about WMC!

You can add an OTA tuner along with Ceton. Only costs $70 for a dual OTA tuner.

They work side by side, and WMC is smart enough to know which tuner to use for what programming.

And when you go strictly OTA, you just remove the CEton, and only use OTA.

It is all about flexibility.

I wish I could find some feature in Win 10 compelling enough to make me want to drop $550 on a Tivo. What are you seeing in Win 10 that's so great?

Im going to buy a tivo roamio Monday. I know it will cost more but i will save money on power. I never had any problems with ceton. it works perfect most of the time.
but i started playing video games on my pc like call of duty black ops 2. and need to do upgrades to my pc without losing my cable tv.

Its going to be a few months before i stop using ceton. i going test the tivo out with a tv antenna for a few months
and put a 3 tb in the tivo before i move the cable card

My HTPC runs about 15W most of the time. It would take me hundreds of years to pay for a Tivo with energy savings alone.
