What is current favorite WMC remote control?
Hello,
Newbie building HTPC and been searching for what remote is being used to control WMC.
I will have only one TV with HTPC next to it. Will buy a Ceton 4 from Ebay. All the searches
have been turning up discontinued hardware. This, I think is the one missing link in my build.
If someone could point me to a remote I'd appreciate it.
TIA

I started with this from Newegg. It's frequently on sale for about $15.

Then I picked up an RCA RCRP05B remote in order to control other devices along with WMC7. The RCA does work with the RRC 126 IR receiver. The RCA is also programmable.

grabbed a refurb'd harmony smart hub with simple remote.
use mostly the harmony android app to control the hub.
the android additionally allows for a vnc server/client app, and the unified remote app
very keen on using an android device as a remote...

FYI, the new Inteset posted by 3rob3 is essentially a backlit and better laid out version of the RCA. Even uses the same codes and is JP1.Mike88 wrote:I started with this from Newegg. It's frequently on sale for about $15.

the now discontinued Antec Veris Basic system - A small infra red receiver black box that goes into a floppy bay that plugs into the mother board and any WMC remote to control it - will wake the pc from sleep or shutdown. if u can get one on ebay 2nd hand is worth the investment. turns a HTC pc into a settop box. brilliant!

I thought about getting the Inteset remote because of the backlit buttons. I did not see any dedicated macro buttons which I would like to have because I'll probably forget which ones were re-programmed.mdavej wrote:FYI, the new Inteset posted by 3rob3 is essentially a backlit and better laid out version of the RCA. Like your RCA and other JP1 remotes, any button can do macros not just the ones labeled Macro. It also comes with stickers so you don't have to remember.

You get what you pay for. It's a fine basic MCE remote but is nowhere near as good a remote as the Inteset. It lacks 7 devices, macros (activities), key moves, key copies, device specific macros, shifted functions, PC/Mac/Linux programmibility, backlight, volume punch-thru, pronto-hex import, etc.

I'm not a fan gyration due to the lack of precision (can't stand Wii-motes either). But you can do exactly the same thing as a gyration with a phone and an app like Mobile Mouse.CharlesLam wrote:i have always had a love for gyration media remotes. no line of sight needed. too bad they arent made anymore

iRule for $49 and your existing iPhone or Android devices. Up to five different makes of handsets/tablets (as many of each type as you want).
With WMC only, no additional hardware needed, as you can control via IP via WMCController. http://www.iruleathome.com/tutorials/mce-control
And you can expand to other IP controllable devices for no additional cost, or IR/RS232 for around $100 per iTach.

The Inteset looks great - does anyone know if it will work with the XBox 360 S and Ceton Echo extenders? If so, with or without the IR receiver?
