Windows 8.1 WMC crashes right after starting up

Installation order: Windows 8.0 install, WMC code application, then Windows 8.1 installed from the App Store.

I also have Ceton My Media Center installed and had My Movies 5 installed, though it still crashes right after starting even after uninstalling My Movies.

I am nearly at my wit's end with this, do you guys have any ideas of how to narrow down this problem and be able to use media center again?

I would make sure WMC works before introducing 3rd party applications. Try a different order. Install Windows 8, upgrade to 8.1, then install WMC. Immediately try to start WMC.

As Scallica said it would be best to get the O/S installed completely, then put WMC in and get it set up and then put your additions on.

I have a question for you. Are you using a PC with built in Intel video? If so are you planning on attaching that PC to a TV or are you doing a headless install?

Check your graphics drivers. Sounds odd but that's about right for WMC....

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear that this is not a new Windows install; the install sequence has been over time on my wife's desktop. I am not too keen on wiping and re-installing everything.

I was also incorrect, it was a fresh 8.1 install, followed by the WMC key to unlock it.

I do have the latest GeForce drivers for my GTX 480 video card and they have been updated with new ones at least once since this started happening.

You have not mentioned what it does when it crashes or what tuners you have installed.

If it were me I would remove all WMC related stuff: tuner drivers, playready, WMC, My media center. Then install just the tuners and WMC to be certain it works.

I get the standard Windows dialog box saying that the program has stopped working and a button to close WMC.

I'll try removing more, but I'm not sure if WMC can be removed in Windows 8.X once you apply the key to unlock it.

It turns out that I had a bad recording file, and when it's in the "Recorded TV" Library, WMC crashes shortly after starting up, but when it's not in the Library, it doesn't crash.

If you are still interested in possible fixes, there has been a lot of discussion and experimentation with different drivers for "similar" video cards. 335.23 seems to be the magic version for the GTX 460. http://www.thegreenbutton.tv/forums/vie ... 903#p75903
