Codec pack breaks overall WMC functionality

#1

Post by psycho013 » Sat Jul 05, 2014 6:32 am

Hi everyone. First off, I'd like to thank this community for helping me in the past; Although I haven't registered until now, this site has been an invaluable resource for troubleshooting my WMC woes.

This time, couldn't find an answer so I'm going to try my luck starting a post.

I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, and after all my driver installations and Windows Updates completed, I installed Shark007's codec packs (advanced and x64 addons), as I've been pretty happy using those in other machines with WMC for the past few years.

The files in my library seem to play fine when I use WMP, or even when I right-click on the file in Windows Explorer and select "Open with Windows Media Center," but if I try to navigate to the file from within WMC, selecting it results in nothing. There's the "ding" to indicate it's been selected, but nothing changes on the thumbnail/selection screen.

Now, I'm thinking it's some kind of incompatibility between my drivers/hardware and the codec pack, but the issue of not getting a file to play is isolated to WMC, so I was hoping someone here might have troubleshooting suggestions. Thanks for your time.

Since you decided to post here, I thought I'd link to the conversation on my forum just to add information.
Retain your sanity, use Shark007 Codecs

Personally, I would say that's an unacceptable response from the person who created this software.

If you changed the settings on the audio tab, I would suggest you open up both, one at a time and select reset all. Don't do any customizations until you test the functionality.
I've had something similar happen after changing the "turn off bitstreaming" setting.

+1

Stick to Lav filters would be my best advice. When I first got into htpc a few years ago I tried the shark pack and it was garbage, very flaky.

@Dkeyguy1 - Thanks. I hadn't made any adjustments at all, but did a reset in both settings apps with no luck. Then, tried suggested settings and still no playback.

@HighValueWarrior - I'm using LAV now with moderate success. Can't get my MKVs to show up in my WMC libraries, though. Any tips would be appreciated; I had relied pretty happily on Shark007's pack until now.

(in my "Water Boy's Mom" voice): Codec packs is the devil! Shark Pack is ornery 'cus it's got all those teeth and no toothbrush!

Disclaimer - unless you know what you are doing, they have their uses but they seem to cause a lot of problems.

I know this is a long shot, but have you tried turning off Media Center navigational sounds.

@barnabas1969 - Thank you. I give this a try and it works well.

@TheReaper - I hadn't tried that, but maybe somewhere down the line when LAV doesn't do what I want it to and I give Shark007 another try, I'll keep it in mind.

Until then, thanks everyone for their feedback and suggestions.
