Switch Question
I have my modem going to an Asus N66U router. The router runs to my media closet to an Asus GX-D1081 switch. Then, my HTPC goes to the swtich along with the Xbox I use for an extender on another TV. (The HTPC itself runs the main TV of course). My question is, I know the first port on the GX-D1081 gets a priority. So which should I hook to that, the extender or the HTPC, or does it matter?

Looking at http://www.asus.com/Networking/GXD1081_V3/ it appears the first port has some QoS settings for VoIP:
Of course if you have a VoIP device you probably want that in the first port to start with.

I have found QoS to sometimes have adverse effects on some standard IP transmissions depending on the implementation. If your switch's firmware doesn't have settings to adjust QoS (by port, priority or application) then I would avoid using the first port for either the HTPC or the extender and see how they both react. If the experience isn't optimal then I would test using the first port with the HTPC, then the extender.Top Priority VIP port: Built-in VIP Ports facilitate lag-free VoIP transmissions by prioritizing voice data traffic.
