My solution for MKV on extenders

#1

Post by 3rob3 » Sat Dec 28, 2013 1:23 am

So I have tried for a while to get good (or any at all) MKV playback on my 360 extenders. The closest I got was Shark007 codecs but the videos look grainy to me. Then I saw Motz's old post about how he converts to M2TS using mkv2vob. Mkv2vob uses tsmuxer.exe to change the container of the file, not re-encode, and is super quick. That worked great for a few of my files but newer ones caused tsmuxer to crash. So I found another tool that works great, ps3muxer:
http://ps3muxer.org/
It uses the same concept as mkv2vob but can handle the newer mkv files. It is super quick (takes about 20 seconds for a 1 hour 720p tv show), can do batch conversion, is free, and playback on extenders is fantastic. Plus extenders (at least the 360) handles m2ts without any codec packs needed on your pc. Files with AAC 5.1 audio (rather than ac3) will take a bit longer but it will still handle them.

Anyway, just thought I would share.

Thanks for this, I tried converting files once with mkv2vob but it would down mix my 5.1 to 2.0 stereo on some .mkv I was trying to convert. I may look into this again now. Thanks.

Would this work for a Ceton echo as well? My brother in law just bought one and he cant get any mkv movies through media browser 3 to play correctly. If I need to post this in the Ceton echo forum I will move it. Thanks for any assistance.

I believe so. This method originated with a post from Motz (who used to work for Ceton):
http://thedigitalmediazone.com/2010/10/ ... h-mkv2vob/

The tool he used (Mkv2vob) has trouble with newer files due to a change in the way people are encoding (as far as I understand....I just know it crashes). The tool I linked to was developed to overcome this problem and is really just a collection of other utilities.

If you are using an echo converting the .mkv to M2TS should allow the files to play with MB3. I converted a few files from .mkv to M2TS and played them on a XBOX 360 with MB3 and they worked great.
