Terrible quality from high quality rips
I recently ripped all my Star Wars movies (1-6) from Blu Ray, at a high quality setting and playing the file back by hand in both Windows 7 or 8 (it's .MP4) shows beautiful results.
If I try to play it on media center (through an Xbox 360 Extender) the quality isn't nearly as good. Any ideas? I use Shark007's codecs, and use the "suggested settings" as indicated.
Thanks for any thoughts!

What's the video bit rate? I think most people say that the highest bit rate you can use (reliably) on the XBox is around 10-15 Mbps.

The details on one of the videos shows "Total bitrate: 3377kbps".... but I know if you're over the 10-15 then it doesn't even play. It plays fine -- it's just ugly looking and pixelated.barnabas1969 wrote:What's the video bit rate? That's a pretty low bit rate. Try something closer to 8000kbps.
And... rip a movie... then test it to make sure you're satisfied with the quality before you rip an entire collection of movies.

The quality is superb if I don't run it through media center. That's the issue.barnabas1969 wrote:That's a pretty low bit rate. Try something closer to 8000kbps.

It's still a very low bit rate. Try 8000.

Where is the setting for bitrate in Handbrake, when I rip? I haven't seen it... just a "quality" setting which I turn to 22.barnabas1969 wrote:It's still a very low bit rate. Try 8000.

I don't use Handbrake. Take a look at the following link:

I use handbrake and if I recall I usually set my high quality rips to 19 or 19.5 on the quality setting. If memory serves, lower numbers are better and it's not a linear scale. The handbrake wiki has some pretty good information, you might google that.

I think you have it backwards on the quality setting. Maybe you should Google it. Either way, 3377kbps is a VERY low quality. Get it closer to 8-10,000K, and you'll be in business.

You need to click "Average Bit Rate" or something like that. I don't have it in front of me. It's right below the setting you are talking about. I agree with Barnabas the bitrate you used is pretty low for HD.Shyatic wrote:Where is the setting for bitrate in Handbrake, when I rip? Actually, 3000+ Kbps usually gives excellent quality for 720p using H264 in Handbrake and can be excellent for 1080p depending on things like aspect ratio, film grain, etc. The favored setting is not "Average Bit Rate"; it is Constant Quality, set to 20-22 (I use 20) for HD material and 18 for SD. nathagt is absolutely correct in noting that this is a logarithmic scale, and lower numbers are better.lithium630 wrote:You need to click "Average Bit Rate" or something like that. "Excellent" is subjective.

He wasn't talking about bit rate. I was answering his question about the quality slider. "The Quality slider ranges from (Low Quality) 51 to 0 (High Quality)" from https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/ConstantQualitybarnabas1969 wrote:I think you have it backwards on the quality setting.
