Why 5-minute start and stop "buffers" by default?

Why 5-minute start and stop "buffers" by default?

When I set up a recording from the app it defaults to start recording 5 minutes ahead of time and stop 5 minutes late. Why doesn't it default to the WMC defaults (I have it set for 1 minute for each)? I didn't see any way to change the defaults in the app settings.
