MP4 playback quality limits on XBox?

#1

Post by cncb » Tue Aug 27, 2013 2:18 pm

I am trying to play some MP4 files via WMC on the XBox 360 and get a blank screen but hear the audio playing. These files are home videos taken with my digital camera (see MediaInfo below). I have MP4 files taken from an older digital camera that play fine. Is this just too much for the XBox to handle? Thanks.

Well, I found some specs on H264 video that the XBox can handle and it looks like the "level" can't be greater than 4.1 (whatever that means). I lowered the level with ffmpeg on one of the videos and it now plays properly. It is disappointing that the video playback capabilities on the XBox are so poor...

It's one of 17 "levels" of complexity that h.264 can be encoded in. Lower power devices can only handle lower levels, which only support smaller screen sizes and lower bit rates.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Levels

Bluray content is usually Level 4.1, so most HD players support up to 4.1, but may refuse to play content that is marked with a higher level (even if they could actually cope with it).

34.2Mbps is way too high for the 360. Officially it supports up to 10Mbps. In practice the limit seems to be closer to 16Mbps.
