Bluetooth remotes

#1

Post by rwalker » Thu Mar 28, 2013 10:45 pm

Looking at some options for a Bluetooth remote (my htpc is a good 20 away and not in line of sight).

I got a Vizio Bluetooth remote which works, but the range is awful. Pretty much have to stand right in front of it.

2 options that I found (don't want just a keyboard):
http://www.amazon.com/SMK-Link-Blu-Link ... te+control
http://www.amazon.com/Unisen-USA-iPazzP ... te+control

Anyone used either of these and can comment on quality and range?

Thanks,
Roy

I haven't used either of those but i have a lenovo A600 remote that is very nice, never could get S3 working tho so it had to go in the loft... You can find em on ebay frequently, none on at the minute tho!!

Personally I think BT is a bad idea for many reasons. The first one you linked is just for PS3 I think. The second looks ok. But I would just add RF to your Visio remote using next generation or use a regular RF mouse/keyboard or phone/tablet app.

What is the advantage of a proprietary RF transmitter vs Bluetooth? Maybe I am missing something. The Bluetooth seems like it would have better support and a bigger selection of products.

Thanks,

RF seems to work better with S3 and this (WMC) is a niche market i don't think anyone has been prepared to invest in creating a decent Bluetooth remote due to cost/profit ratios. There was a sideshow prototype that looked amazing but the company went bust...

As milli said, BT won't wake your HTPC. Additionally it doesn't work during boot (i.e. can't change bios settings, etc.), has worse battery life, and is rarer and more expensive than RF. If you happen to find a BT device you like, that's great, but in my experience, RF is a lot better for HTPC and gives you a lot more options. I do use BT keyboards and mice with other devices, just not HTPCs.
