If I have read this correctly this is a one time setup and does not happen if your network configuration changes (for example I just got a new router). I would like the My Media Center Configuration UI to program the router to open the ports. For example when I click the "Test Port Forwarding" button (Advainced.Network) or when I toggle "Enable network discovery" on.
I see that Microsoft provides a UPNP nat manager API: UPnPNAT. here is a discussion of this

+1 I have never seen it do anything automatically with uPnP. an enable uPnP checkbox on the network properties tab would be great.
