Cannot play most of my video files

never had a problem w/ the media center app. but i have swiiched to my media center and i cant play most of my video files. if i use the remote everything is good vid plays fine, but i select the same movie through the app on my note 2 i get the "cannot play this file". it has been with mp4 and mkv formats and probably a few others. so i know that media center can play it fine just not when i select it threw the android app

anyone have any ideas. thanks for the help
