Picking out my first tuner for WMC and other concerns

Guys as of right now we have a basic cable tv package soon I plan on moving to over the air I just have not got around to installing a roof antenna yet. I have two Windows 7 media center computers and I want to start using them for the tv functions mainly the DVR and tv guide. So with that said what tuner do you guys recommend? I'm leaning towards the HD home run as I stated we have cable now but in the future we are going ota so I want a device that can be used for cable and ota. However I do have two concerns my first concern is when doing ota I've notice the channel numbers are strange such as 28.1 or 17.1 so when using a windows mediapc remote what button combination do you press in order to change the channel? My second question is does the WMC have any problems displaying a guide for channels like 28.1 or 17.1? I also pasted the link of the current remotes I use for my media pc's.

The HD HomeRun is popular as it's a network tuner. Good choice.

I'm a fan of the Hauppage 2250 if you got the room for it in your PC(s).

The WMC guide displays channels with subchannels fine (the '.1')

On a WMC remote you would press 9-8-*-1 for 98.1

I don't have room for another card so thats another reason I picked the HD Home run I will centerlize it in our network closet looks like the remote that I'm using does not have a dash or astrick button. I would like to know can you remap channels in media center for example let's say NBC is 70.4 can you turn that into 704? BTW what remote do you use?

Yes. Get a program called Guide Tool.

I have a couple of Harmony 300i remotes.

The guide will display 28.1, 17.1, etc. because those are the channel numbers used for OTA in your area.

The guide also shows the station call letters. IOW it will not show NBC but will show something like Wxxx depending where you live.

Take a look at My Channel Logos.

The before picture shows the station ID and the after photo shows really nice icons. You might want to try that.

For remotes I use the Rosewill RRC-126.

Or the RCA RCRP05B.

I got the RCA on sale for $8 and like that I can control my A/V receiver’s volume control with it. It works with the Rosewill IR receiver.

So in order for me to make this a user friendly experience I need to add the channel logos I'm also assuming if I use guidetool I will be able to map channel 29.4 to channel 294 which will be pressed on the remote? Now of course I could always purchase a remote that has a key on it that will allow me to do sub channels but I like the ones I already have.

I don't use My Channel Logos, even though it is inexpensive, or any other extra guide software. I don't know if you can change the channel number.

All OTA channels use a decimal point & I just accept this because that's their official number. For example, NBC by me was channel 5 in the old analog days. Now it is 5.1, and they have a subchannel of 5.2.

The Rosewill remote, which is a WMC7 remote, does have the " * ". The universal RCA does not.

I've never had to use the " * ", I just click on the program in the EPG. For me I find this user friendly & is what I do with my satellite DVR. I can see that if you have cable & have hundreds of channels & you want to jump to one at the other end of the guide. But you're not going to have all those channels with OTA so there will not be nearly as many pages of guide to scroll through to get to the channel that you want.

The My Channel Logos may satisfy most of your needs, and it probably would worth $5 to give it a try.
