Skip button and others stop working

I have used WMC for many years with a "green button" remote (IR). A few months ago I starting randomly having problems with the two skip buttons, as well as a couple others. Switching to two other remote controls (one with its own IR receiver, one with wireless receiver) does not fix this, so it is not a hardware problem with the remote. The only way I have found around this is to restart the computer. Simply restarting WMC does not help. It is a pain to have to restart the computer each time this happens. What could cause this to randomly occur? A corrupt driver?
