Using the mobile app (on both Surface and WP8) I can only seem to initiate playback to my Xbox extender. It prompts for both the extender and media center, but never works directly against the media center. Is it possible that it is because I replaced the shell (explorer.exe with ehshell.exe)?

yep a re-boot usually solve everything, we are working so the next services update will not have this random conflict, although WMC is very odd sometims.
