CES 2013: What's exciting you?

#1

Post by makryger » Tue Jan 08, 2013 1:07 am

Alright, so there may not be a whole lot of WMC news this year, but that doesn't mean we can't get excited about the latest and greatest technology!

What's exciting me at this years CES?
1) New technologies that improve phone battery life. Like the Sofant SmartAntenna and Sharp's new IGZO display technology
2) Glasses-free 3DTV

On a slightly DVR-related note, I'm starting to lose track of all the ways to stream your TV to your devices. There's google tv in TVs, google TV in a bunch of different devices, xfinity streaming on intel devices, slingbox, roku, roku with broadcast addition, builtin drop box, the reported new apple tv, tons of new STBs... TWC on your ipad, Dish hopper, dish hopper on your ipad...

Honestly... Nothing.

There are as you said to many ways to do something simple. They want us to have a thousand STB each with a remote. They want to lock down TV even more (Hey, use our chips, they are so secure that even those who pay for content can't watch them...)

Honestly, I'm more excited about E3 2013 later in the year. I want to see the "Xbox TV" stuff.

4K: totally useless. I don't have 10k€ to spend on a TV that will a) be underpowered when/if actual 4k content comes, b) doesn't (and, imho, never will) have any form of 4k content. Also, 200Gb per movie... Yeah, nuf said.
Oled: this intrigues me ever since Sony released that small TV a couple of years back. But then again, already have two high ends LED TV's... So, meh.
Nvidia handheld: what is this I don't even
AMD rebadge: Lol.

Oh, and also:

"Hello USA? Remember us, the rest of the World? Yeah, we also exist. We're not that far back as you think we are. We have money to spend on technology, but seems to us, you don't want it."

So excited? Nope.

Not excited, but peaked my interest until I learned more about it:

Intel Comcast partnership, Xfinity (WIN8?) IP TV viewing

It did get me thinking more about all the built in Windows 8 stuff that's in the works. Everyone is making a Windows 8 app:

VLC Player:

Plex:

etc etc etc........

You mean, "piqued" your interest. Just one of my pet peeves.

I'm interested in the HDHR4 networked 4--tuner. More tuners is always better!

Something that amuses me:

All American cableco's are building cable boxes... with extenders...

Meanwhile, MS kills WMC. I really don't get them.

Nothing...certainly nothing that includes DRM in some new fancy wrapper.

i'm excited about IllumiRoom.

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/pro ... llumiroom/

Our system uses the appearance and the geometry of the room (captured by Kinect) to adapt the projected visuals in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics. What you see in the videos below has been captured live and is not the result of any special effects added in post production.

Pretty cool.

Funny- if this were only a few short years ago, that idea would sound ridiculous. But now with Pico Projectors you could probably have the tech built into the TV itself!

OK, I'm sold. Figure out how to make it work with movies in Media Center. Show technology like that to your friends and neighbors, and they will be BEGGING to know how to get it.

it probably wouldn't take much of a projector at all, especially since it looks like all low res graphics.

i thought the furniture looking as though it was moving was just plain out awesome.

and all this thanks to the kinect sensor.

OT: What ever happened to controlling MC with gestures through the kinect?

[edit] Doh!

Hanging out with friends and the CES parties? Honestly, CES is old news to me at this point. Oh, and I want a Sphero (http://www.gosphero.com/) but I know they aren't actually new - just can't justify the $130 for them. Actually I saw a couple cool remotes, too.

I guess I am mostly excited to see the 4K stuff come around.
Ben had a great write-up http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/11/ultr ... -ces-2013/ the issue really is content and TV which will take forever to switch over.

The guys from Boombotix where there showing of the Rex portable speaker. I backed them a while ago: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/boo ... le-speaker so I am excited to see that.

I guess that is about it.. maybe the new fitbit stuff..
