Typically on my gaming rigs I've used a dedicated sound card. They have made improvements on the motherboard sound over the years but it seems like dedicated sound cards sound better. I'm still new to the HDMI audio arena and I'm currently using HDMI audio on my GT430 video card. Does the video card have its own sound processor or does it simply pipe out the motherboard sound via HDMI?
The HDMI goes into my Yamaha AVR.
On board sound, HDMI, or dedicated card??

Since you have an AVR .. Basically your piping the audio over HDMI to the AVR for processing (aka: bitstreaming). Or at least you should be. You do NOT need a separate sound card to get better audio.

by "sound processor" what you really mean is digital to analog converter (DAC). You're not converting digital to analog on your computer at all--you're just passing the digital sound straight out to the AVR--so the sound card is a moot point.
