Error Intalling Connector on XP machine (WHS 2011)
I have been trying to install the connector software on my windows XP sp3 netbooks. The installer gets all the way to configuring my computer and then displays the error message which says "Installer has encountered an unexpected error press close to undue most of the changes made." When i check the installer log the place where it appears to bomb out is: "Could not ensure that NetTcpPortSharing is running. I have tried many of the steps that come up when googleing the unexpected error and none of them work for me. I have also tried to manually start the NetTcpPortSharing service but it won't start it simply says that the service did not respond to the start command?
Any ideas?

I have no prior dealings with that error, a wild stab in the dark would be to run the system file checking utility maybe?
Type sfc /scannow into a cmd prompt window and press enter, you'll probably need to insert your Windows Disc if any files need replacing.
If you're running under a limited user account in Windows then you'll need to use the right click> 'Run as' option to launch an admin cmd prompt I think.

Ok so there must be something wrong with the .net framework 4. I rolled the service back to use thev 3 version and it worked.
I rolled it back by editing the registry for the Net.TCP Port Sharing service to use the revision 3 version of SMSvcHost.exe. I am going to use it like this for a while and see if I run into any errors. To me this would indicate that something is wrong with the .net v4 instilation..... thoughts?

Ok so posting this mainly for future users in case they have this problem.....
There must be something wrong with the v4 config file. When i replaced the config file for SMSvchost for v4 from the one in v3 the service starts with no problem. When i use the one that installs with v4 two things happen...
1. on reboot the service simply reports that it is starting....checking the running processes smsvchost.exe is running but it never reports as started
2. if you stop the process and and then try to manually restart the process it gives a 1053 error: The process did not respond to a start command.
I am going to compare the config files and see if i can figure out what is going on.

Ok so there are two differences between the files.
The v3 file has an added line <generatePublisherEvidence enabled="false" /> that is in the <runtime> class
and the v4 file has an additional class
<system.serviceModel>
<!-- SMSvcHost ETW traces are redirected by default to an etwProviderId different from WCF's default.
To trace to the default provider, remove the etwProviderId attribute below. -->
<diagnostics performanceCounters="Off" etwProviderId="{f18839f5-27ff-4e66-bd2d-639b768cf18b}"/>
</system.serviceModel>
anyone know what these mean?

Yes i had MSE on both of the systems. It seems that MS has pushed an update of .Net as I have not seen this problem surface for awhile now.
