Win 8, WMC 8, won't wake up to record TV

#1

Post by indyed » Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:14 pm

Recently upgraded (?) my HP MediaCenter PC to Win 8 with Windows Media Center Pack. Computer setup up worked OK but now computer won't "wake up" to record TV. WMC records per schedule when computer is running, but not when asleep. Is there a setting to fix this? :?: :?:

Well, you could do what everyone here does when he wants stability and high WAF: don't let it sleep. Leave it on.

That's a pretty big deal. Have you tried to set up a simple task in Task Scheduler and see if it runs when the system is sleeping?

It's really only $5/month to power a desktop PC...

so this is a theoretical pc then. these are not figures that cut any ice with me. plus what about the TV sleeping as opposed to being off. same with avr. how many hard drives are in your PC? should i go on?

What's the prob, bobbob? Just measure what your PC uses and look up the cost on the chart. Nothing wrong with those numbers at all. My real HTPC runs between 40 and 60W most of the time. My TV is 1-2W sleeping. So $5/month is about right. Seems like nothing to some, but that's a big deal to me. The ONLY reason I have an HTPC in the first place is to save money. There's no way I'd burn another $5/month for nothing. There's no way I'd ever buy Win 8 either, but that's another story.

simple really, the cost of electricity in the UK is about 17p /KwH so just off the top level of that chart. no idea what power my pc draws but there's 7 disks so i'm guessing its in the middle at 500w. that works out at over $90 a month hence my surprise at your $5.

i would still question the table based upon what you are doing with your PC, 100% CPU must draw more power than 10%

Just plug it in to one of those kilowatt meters that run for $30.

I'd be very surprised if your HTPC consumes 500 watts. That would be a very beefy PC. Your HDDs aren't going to draw much power...10 or 12 watts each max (assuming something like a WD Caviar Black, which draws 10.7 watts when reading/writing). I'm guessing you are probably in the 150-200 watt range...maybe a bit higher, but not much. Certainly not 500 watts.

FWIW, my PC draws about 80-90 watts under maximum load and something like 50-60 watts at idle (I don't remember the exact numbers, but they were in those ranges), and I pay about 11 cents per kWh. Even pushing the PC to max load for 30 days, I'd only consume about $7 worth of electricity.

I had a similar problem with my system and it was because of the Broadcom land driver. I had to download a new one from the internet and now my pc is working like a champ.

Wow, I'm paying less than that per unit.

(Cynical and sarcastic hats on :) )

1. We're too polite to complain loudly about it.
2. We shut down our coal mines and now buy it in from overseas.
3. We're too concerned with how much CO2 we kick out - so we keep having to pay for our suppliers to build wind farms and plant trees (like our tiny little island really makes a big difference in the grand scheme of things!).

i stand to be corrected but i was under the impression that generally things cost more in the UK but we receive higher salaries to compensate. thats certainly my experience from people talking about holidays in the US and talking to my US colleagues. based on zero research though
