Apps on Echo ?

Any plans to allow other devs to develop apps for Echo ? I'd love to buy one but without ability to access MY collection via Plex app (plex can transcode on the fly to any format that Echo natively supports ) I think I'd rather go for cheap HTPC due to WAF.

Media center apps work on the Echo (within the range of capabilities available on the Echo that is). For example, Media Browser. This is true of all extenders and the Echo is leveraging the extender code base.

If I understand Plex correctly, it is simply a DLNA server... correct? If so, then any DLNA client should be able to access the content, provided that the Plex server can transcode into a format that the client can support.

I think the question is... can the Echo act as a DLNA client?

The answer to that is quite simply... Yes. Install TubeCore on your Media Center PC. Now, your Media Center PC and all your extenders (including the Echo) are DLNA clients.

Plex is ALOT more than DNLA server.

Plex Server is one part and Plex client is another.
I was asking about Plex Client ( such as Plex client for Mac, Windows, iOS client, Google TV client, LG TV client, Samsung TV Client, Roku client, WP7 client )

Plex Server can transcode media to anything device supports. I do not want use Echo as DNLA cleint because DNLA does not ( and can not ) provide all bells and whistles Plex offers ( metadata , subtitles etc etc )
If Apps were allowed on Echo, I'm sure PLex devs would be very much interested in writing client for Echo as they develop client for every other device under the sun ....

They would have to write the client in the form of a Media Center plugin that works on all extenders (echo, linksys, Xbox360, HP).

i think as gpatlanta says the answer is no. if its not available in WMC on your HTPC then it won't be available on any extender (including the Echo). Even if its available in WMC on your HTPC there is no guarantee it will be available on an extender

MediaBrowser works fine on the Echo with all the metadata displayed and it loads mkv's for playback so long as the codecs contained w/in the mkv are supported by the Echo it plays back. MediaBrowser also has a transcoder built in for extenders that I haven't played with yet.

I'm pretty sure I remember Ceton touting a great "app store" at one point but this may have gone the way of analog outputs and DTS...

They did mention the possibility of having something on the Q. So maybe someday... You never know.
