Ripped DVD's not playing on 360

#1

Post by chrisaroz » Sun Jun 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Up until a week or so ago I had a nice setup with my WMC connected right to the TV for our home theater but decided to transition to a complete 360 setup instead. I have about 30 DVD's ripped using DVDFab on my PC, but they're not showing up on the 360. When I try to add the library it keeps trying to drill down into the folders but it never sees anything. Mind you, these play fine on the PC (combo DVD and Blu-Rays). Can the 360 not see straight rips? Do i need to convert them into something else? If so, what's the best way once they are already on the computer?

Thank you all in advance for your help!!

Nope; xbox 360 won't play a ripped DVD.

You have two options; transcode, or convert.

The two options I know of for transcoding are 1) Mikinho's transcoder - http://mikinho.com/wmc/transcode/, and 2) the MyMovies transcoder - http://www.mymovies.dk. If using MyMovies, you'll need to have points on your account to activate the transcoder. You can either submit enough movie data to gain points or purchase them.

I haven't tried michael's transcoder (mikinho), but I have used the MyMovies version and it works fine as long as your computer can handle it.

What I've done is convert all my DVD rips to mpeg2 WTV files using VideoRedo; it allows you to have FF/RR controls. You lose that with transcoding, and WTV files have just played smoother on my xbox's. There are other methods of converting to WTV; one I believe is Auto-rip & compress, and DVRMS toolbox.

Another possible solution is to convert the DVDs (feature only) to h.264 with Handbrake or dozens of other free and low cost tools.

There is a way to get them to play but I don't remember at the moment. I will search around and look for the way I did it. I remember trying the conversion stuff and finally found a really easy solution.

this http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/06/setting- ... w-kid.html was still working for me up until about 18months ago when i converted everything to mp4. for some reason mentioning transcode360 seems to make some people very angry though so i'll leave it there. it worked for me.

edit to add i'd just handbrake them into an mp4 or mkv though

I still use this method and it works very well for me on Win7 64bit.

What sort of computer specs are needed to ensure a good experience with Transcoding ripped dvd's to an extender?
