W8 upgrade cost for new PCs

#1

For those planning on buying a new PC soon, if you were worried about the cost of upgrading to W8, fear not. The upgrade cost from W7 to W8 Pro is going to be a mere $15 on newly purchased PCs. Two things are interesting here- 1) the price is significantly lower than the Vista to 7 upgrade path (that was $30-40), and also they are giving you Pro, rather than their basic version.

.... of course, this news is beside the point that none of you want to upgrade anyways :P

In the past this upgrade was free for those that purchase a NEW PC, within a certain purchase window.

I must be mistaken, then... but that was definitely not for the upgrade to Pro.

This only applies if you buy a new PC on or after June 2, and is a typical move by Microsoft. The general idea is to stop people from waiting until the upcoming OS release to buy a PC.

Just thought I'd throw that out there before someone thinks they can upgrade their current PC for $15.

This is slightly different to what they've done before.

With Vista and Win7 they gave a free upgrade to the equivalent new OS version. This time around they are upgrading everyone to Win8 Pro, but charging $15 (which will probably end up being £15) for it. Unfortunately it doesn't mean that Pro will cost just $15 more than base Win8. But it doesn't mean it won't be either.
