Forum software upgrade
Hi folks,
just a quick heads up to say we'll be upgrading the forums to the latest version of phpBB within the next few days.
I plan to carry out the work one morning (UK time) this week, the forums will hopefully only be offline for a short time.

When adding a post, I’ve been seeing quite a long delay from hitting Submit to the page refreshing with the new post. Edits seem to be quicker. It was doing this before the upgrade though (I hoped it might get fixed).

I have also seen this, one time it even timed out and I got an error page (sorry, did not make note of what it said). In all cases the post did get posted, it just took a long time to "process" and in one case returned an error page (yet still was posted).

Posting times seem to be pretty good at the moment - I was still adjusting some settings into last evening (UK time) so that might have improved performance.
Please let me know if you do still see delays when posting.

I'm definitely seeing delays when starting a new topic (generally 2 - 3 seconds for me) - I'll see if I can speed this up a bit.

Everytime I've posted since the changeover, the post actually posts but I receive this error.

That's very strange, I haven't seen that myself at all!
I'll check the logs and see what our new hosts think of the error.
Has anybody else seen this error please?

I can't be certain, but I believe that is the error I saw the one time that it gave me an error as opposed to just taking a long time to re-display the page after posting.

I found a few older template files that needed tweaking a bit in order to work with the latest phpBB code - please let me know if you see any further error messages.
I'm still talking to the new hosts regarding delays when posting.

Just an update:
I just tried to post a reply on a thread and got that exact SQL error that StinkyImp posted above, so this is the second time I've gotten it personally.

Thanks for the report, did you have to re-reply, or did the post make it through despite the error?
The timing coincides with the daily backup that runs automatically.
I'll talk to our new hosts again, I'm guessing we're hitting a limit that's set on the MySQL server - based on our hosting plan.

I use the forum atypically... I open threads in a new tab and then post that way. Whenever I would receive that SQL error I would simply close that "error" tab and then go back to the original thread. In every instance I found that my reply had posted.

Yes, every time the post is posted, it just seems like after it posts it either has a long delay or you get the SQL error.

Yep, seeing these delays frequently and the SQL 2006 errors occasionally. Had one at 08:35 GMT today (1/12).
The post does still get posted.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Unfortunately, it looks like we really do need to be running on a VPS rather than the much cheaper shared hosting that we're currently using.
The MySQL timeouts on shared hosting plans are set low intentionally - in order to give the multiple websites hosted on a single instance a fair share of resources (and it also helps to sell a VPS plan now and again I'm sure ).
I'm talking to various providers to try and get some extra discount if I commit to a long term contract.
Please bear with us in the meantime.

Not sure if any changes have been made, but I've not had any problems recently.

Thanks for the feedback, I've tweaked a few settings but no major changes have happened. It could be that our hosts have looked kindly on us (or it could just be a coincidence!).
