I get an occasional failed to get a token. I attribute ythose to a problem at the SD end. I have always had my HTPC's sleep when idle. (it's one of the main reasons I went to HTPC's - in order to conserve energy plus the great WMC UI) However, I have always run win 7 with updates shut off from the time the HTPC's were instantiated. Your batch file sounds like a good workaround attempt.

Your database is corrupted. You have garbage collection disabled (the -nogc switch on the task command line)... do you perform garbage collection somewhere else?

At some point you had edited your Scheduled Task to add the "-nogc" switch to the action with epg123client.exe. If you want to start letting epg123 handle the garbage cleanup and keep your database in good shape then you can either edit it again to remove the switch, or simply delete your current task and create a new one.

To manually run garbage cleanup, from a command prompt run "START /WAIT c:\windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe -b -dbgc -updateTrigger". If it completes successfully then you can try an update again. If there are errors, not much you can do but perform a [Rebuild] from the client.

    Update:
My PCs are updating reliably since I replaced the contents of the scheduled task so that it runs a batch file that waits for the network to be available before running the EPG123 steps that used to be in the task.

This is the batch file I created:

    Code: Select all

    @echo off
    cd /d "%~d0"
    setlocal

    set /a pass=0
    :loop
if %pass% equ 100 goto :end
    set /a "pass+=1"
call ping bthub | find "time" >nul
    if errorlevel 1 goto :loop

    C:\Utils\epg123\epg123.exe -update
    C:\Utils\epg123\epg123Client.exe -i "C:\Utils\epg123\output\epg123.mxf"

    :end
    echo %date%-%time%>update_epg.log
    echo Passes: %pass%>>update_epg.log
Notes: The ping command is set to ping my router by name so that I know DNS is working. What find.exe checks for depends on the Windows version in use as the results ping returns seems to be different in different versions.

    update:

I had to increase the max passes allowed as it kept exceeding the number of tries. One of the PCs gets up to 163 because ping returns an error almost instantaneously when the network isn't ready.

Also, the number of passes doesn't seem to make it into the log file because there's nothing following it so I changed the last bit to make it work.

    My batch file is now:

    Code: Select all

    @echo off
    cd /d "%~d0"
    setlocal

    set /a pass=0
    :loop
if %pass% equ 200 goto :end
    set /a "pass+=1"
ping bthub | find "time" >nul
    if errorlevel 1 goto :loop

    C:\Utils\epg123\epg123.exe -update
    C:\Utils\epg123\epg123Client.exe -i "C:\Utils\epg123\output\epg123.mxf"

    :end
    echo %pass% pass(es) at %time% on %date%>>update_epg.log

Instead of pinging in a rapid-fire way like this, you can instead pause in between pings by putting this right before the existing ping:

    Code: Select all

    ping 192.0.2.1 -n 1 -w 1000 >nul
1000 means 1000 milliseconds (1 second). You can use a smaller or larger number to increase or decrease the pause. In this way you only need to ping "bthub" a few times (once a second if you use 1000).

Using a ping like this to pause is a common way to pause in a Windows/DOS batch script because they did not include a better way to do it. Win10 finally has a way ("timeout"), but even that one is not great as it requires the input not be redirected, so may not work in all situations plus it does not work in Windows versions earlier than Win10.

P.S. The "call" command is meant to call other batch files, so it is not required to put it in front of the "ping", you can just call "ping" directly.

EDIT: In case you are wondering what is so special about the IP address 192.0.2.1, it is defined in RFC 3330. It states that any IP address starting with 192.0.2.x should only be used in documentation and example code and should not actually exist on the Internet, so the ping should time out (which is what we want so that the pause works correctly). So this address can really just be any IP address that does not exist.

I don't know where the call came from but you are correct it isn't needed.

last saturday i decided to start from scratch and do a new rebuild, It appeared to be successful. Today i noticed that my guide updates were failing again, Is there something i am not setting properly at the set-up?. Let me know so i can set it up again and hopefully have it be fully successful for the long term. any type of anti-virus setting or otherwise i need to triple check?

here is my log from just now:

Your database is still corrupt. Did you run the garbage cleanup?

i did the rebuild, then did a manual update (that was successful) - for the previous attempts that failed, it was during the importing phase right near the end and when the bar was at about the 80% level.

anyways, this is the log from my last update about 3 minutes ago , hopefully Gary or someone can tell if this did the trick and should not see any future problems

i see that gary replied in the meantime, I tried doing that garbage thing a week ago and never got it to work, so i thought a brand new rebuild was the way to go, start from scratch - and I thought it was good last weekend, but something along the line went bad, I read the epg123 installations instructions word for word and didnt see where i could turn anything on or off during rebuild/re-installation to modify anything

i went to command prompt and pasted your string in; when i included the quote marks, i got an error about syntax

when i pasted the stuff inside the quote marks, nothing happens, i don't even see the C: yet, and its been like 5 minutes. - it never says "success" or anything

i just tried to replicate and got the same results, thats why i went to the rebuild

Garbage cleanup can take over an hour to complete on some systems, you need to wait longer than 5 minutes.

Also, I don't know if it reports the result of the cleanup (although it might if it has errors) to the screen. You can look for the results in the Windows "Event Viewer" under: Application and Services Logs -> Media Center

Look for log entries with Source: MCUpdate, they will normally say "Starting client maintenance" and "Client maintenance has completed" (if there were no errors).

Sorry, I don't think you did. I forgot that demanded updates using [Save & Execute] or 'Update Guide' from the tray disable garbage cleanup during that update. The log entries you pasted showed -nogc so I thought that was from a task run.

I think the best way is to just keep an eye on the EPG123 status icon on the WMC main page. If there is a problem with importing new guide information it should be indicated with a red icon instead of the normal green icon. You can then look at the log and see if the reason appears to be a database corruption issue.

Database corruption occurs from time to time, but it should not be that often. If you find that it is occurring often, then there may be other issues with your system that would need to be investigated.

After less than 3 weeks, the updates are failing again; I will run the garbage clean up once again and see if I can import without a rebuild.

I would really prefer NOT to have to perform a manual garbage cleanup and rebuild every 10-14 days.
but before i do anything, i will post the log once again here. I tried a manual update last night around 6 pm, my normal update time is 4 am.
