WMC Guide Stopped Updating

#1

Post by AlCapwn » Thu Jun 11, 2020 2:29 am

This was originally setup successfully a couple months previously, however recently my father told me his WMC Guide stopped updating. Upon looking at it, I re-created the task and redid the "Save & Execute" function but sadly the guide was still not updating.

I decided to redo the setup using "http://epg123.garyan2.net/install/", but when you have to run Setup TV Signal in WMC; the "Downloading TV Setup Data" part hangs forever. Is there any reason this would be happening?

He's running Windows 8.1 x64.

Also Strange, the downstairs PC he has hasn't had a single issue and its guide is still functioning.

That is definitely weird. Since the MS servers are off-line now, WMC should quickly respond with a prompt that it couldn't download setup data. Maybe it is trying to using some cached download data from when the servers were up.

My suggestion, bypassing your current issue and assuming you performed Step 1 to delete the existing database, would be the following:

1) Open the client and click the [Restore] button. Select the most recent backups_yyyyMMdd_HHmmss.zip file. This will restore the WMC configurations to what it was prior to starting Step 1.
2) Click the [Manual Import] and select the epg123.mxf file to import the last created MXF file.
3) Check WMC to see if the guide is there.

If not,
4) Close the client.
5) Open the configuration GUI and click the [Clear Cache] button.
6) Click the [Save & Execute] button.
7) Once it is done, check WMC to see if the guide is there.

If not, I will need to see you trace.log file to see what the problem is.

Thank you so much for the suggestions, I couldn't get restore to work until I cleared the cache, then I was able to restore then running the save + exit properly updated the guide. While I'm still quite curious as to why it stopped working in the first place, I'm just glad it's good as new. Thank you again.

I noticed (perhaps) related problem with Windows 8.1 x64 with epg123 version 1.3.7.30, which ran flawlessly from 5/21 through 6/4.
Results in WMC function error and WCM extenders are unable to connect since WMC stops "Windows Media Center has stopped working" - I fix each day by restarting PC.
Not clear on root cause or solution to fix and not have to restart every day.
Not sure if guide data is current, either.
Log files indicate problem started 6/5/2020.
Please suggest solution approach.

Log file excerpts below show successful 6/4, and issue started 6/5.

I reinstalled following Installation Steps for Clean Start and noticed it picked up my recently added HDHomerun PRIME cable card listings, so I selected ignore for those, and suspect the added hardware (not sure when, but could be 6/4 day) for the device could have been reason for WMC issue. The device is used for PLEX Live TV, and works fine with PLEX, but I prefer WMC 8.1 setup and I suspect the reinstallation may resolve the issue. I will know overnight, as it fails after 4am, and will post update to confirm if issue resolved with reinstallation. Bottom line, doubt this is software issue, most likely issue caused by added hardware that software picked up for possible use with WMC, which is not the case. Thank you.

I believe that error indicates a problem with the WMC DB. A "Clean Start" is overkill to fix this, but I think it should fix it.

Correct. That error indicates a database error and a garbage cleanup typically fixes it. I'm running a long experiment on a couple machines to see if a fresh WMC setup will ever do the client maintenance without the maintenance package download from MS, and so far the answer is no. Trying to formulate a plan for that so users can keep their databases healthy. The answer will probably be with EPG123 v2.0 that I'm working on....

Update - issue fixed, guide update ran successfully... excerpt from log file posted below for reference.

Issue was most likely caused by adding different hardware (HD Homerun PRIME with cable card), since my WMC setup uses Ceton ETH with cable card hardware (my PLEX uses the HD Homerun hardware - originally used the OTA device, but wanted to see if I could get Live TV with cable card - my original efforts failed on that, because I included both OTA and cable card for PLEX, and I see this is not a valid combo today for PLEX, so recently I removed the OTA (which worked fine) and only used the cable card (which also works fine for me) to see if Live TV would allow me to view my TV channels remotely, and it does, something I wanted for WMC, and PLEX seems to have mostly resolved. The newer hardware may have picked up an additional channel that is not picked up by Ceton (not sure, doesn't matter to me). Certainly during my reinstall setup EPG123 definitely noticed the hardware (nice!), because there was a confirmation window asking if I wanted to include something clearly associated with the HD Homerun PRIME device, so I chose not to include it, since that device is not needed for WMC (only Ceton device). Additional EPG123 cleanup features would be awesome, but I think it would be difficult to "fool-proof" for case when person adds new hardware (which is not same as existing hardware in use), and hardware is not for use with WMC.
Bottom line... I most likely caused the issue by adding new (different) hardware to my network that was not intended for use by WMC - my issue is resolved and WMC 8.1 with Ceton and cable card using EPG123 is working flawlessly again - Thank you!! :-)

Similar issue here, 7 WMC's, all same issue (sort of). For me, even though there is a scheduled task I don't think it ran successfully (even though my logs say it did), the guide would still not refresh but I was ok manually launching EPG123 and hitting SAVE/EXECUTE to get a fresh guide going. That's stopped working as of a few weeks ago. I tried the fix above (Restore/Clear cache) but still no guide data. I went further and installed EPG123 on a WMC that never had EPG on it. Installed, I logged in, let it get the lineup, Set a task, save/execute and still no guide. When I launched WMC it even gave the popup stating 'guide data old in 3d, want to download or skip,' I chose skip because I figured EPG would put them in place, was that my mistake?

Your token to Schedules Direct is being expired. Do you have any other EPG123 or another program running that uses Schedules Direct around the same time? There can only be 1 active token at a time, so if another program requests a token it will expire the existing one and cause that program to fail.

Not running anywhere (that I know of). It is possible that I set all the tasks to update @ the same time (which would cause the conflict), but what about the log posted? That was ran independent of any running WMC and any task to update the guide (I typically choose 1AM). I havent plugged those account details into anything other than my WMC's running the EPG client. I'll go back and double check them all though.

Just a point that may explain it, just by opening the EPG123 configuration GUI, and logging into your Schedules Direct account, that requests a new token. So just opening EPG123 on another computer will expire the existing token and grab a new one. You don't need to be actually running the update to expire the token.

So token issue is resolved (I uninstalled EPG client n all WMC's but one). Now I get a clean log (below) but still no guide. I thought maybe the 'My Channels Logo' app which I've used for years may have started conflicting with EPG so I uninstalled. I went even further and disabled mcupdate in Task Scheduler (so it would stop asking to download guide?) Under Services, I disabled Windows Media Center Scheduler Service (I dont use it as a DVR, just for TV watching). All of this with reboots in between, still no guide. Any other ideas? (fyi there were 100's of entries of matching TV shows in the log, I removed them for sanity).

Could you send your complete trace.log file to support@garyan2.net? The file is located at c:\programdata\garyan2\epg123\trace.log. You've cut out some information in your posting.

Question: You are downloading 2 different FiOS lineups... do you really want to do that?

The client has nothing to do with the SD token, its' primary purpose is to only import the mxf file into the WMC database. It is the server component (EPG123, configuration gui) that handles the token and downloads from the SD servers.

I think there are a couple things we will need to do; 1) remove the FiOS lineup you do not use from the WMC database, and 2) map the correct lineup stations to your channels. Both are done in the EPG123 Client GUI.

I emailed the full log file, thank you. As for 2 Lineups, I dont have to but I like to. We're fortunate that Verizon gives us access to both counties as residents here in MD could lean in either location. There are maybe 5 channel diff sbetween them at the local channel range. If I have to remove one, I can. Thanks

Could you open the client, maximize it so I can see as much of the columns on the left side, and take a snapshot of it? Post it here or send in an email.

Having 2 similar lineups with automatch enabled can cause some problems. EPG123 uses the channel number to make the match so if both lineups have a channel X, it doesn't know which one is correct. In your case, pretty much all of the channels are the same with differences primarily being with the local public stations. See the pic below for differences in your 2 lineups.
lineupDiffs.PNG
Regardless of the automatch working or not, you should have guide listings as long as 1 of the stations from a lineup was mapped using the automatch. The snapshot of your client will let me see what is going on within the database.

Got the picture and sent an email on how to fix it. I forgot to ask though, did you at any point use the [Restore] button from the client?

Circling back. I went thru the CLEAN START but when it reached Step 2 and launched WMC for the rest of setup, it froze at the 'downloading program data' with only one dot in the bar. Nothing I could do, so I removed the WMC from Windows Components, rebooted, then re-added it back, then re-ran EPG Clean install. This time it worked, stepped thru all 3 steps of the setup process successfully. Still no guide in WMC. I went to bed. Woke up this AM and there was a guide (I set the auto-task to refresh for every 1AM). The only anomaly now is that when you launch WMC it now shows a TV image with a date inside that is today and its YELLOW. I've noticed in the past that date could be in the future or past and be GREEN or even RED (never saw this icon on the WMC splash screen until I think I put EPG in place). Either way, I have a guide so I'm not going to push it. I'll remove WMC and re-add to all the others and hopefully this is worked out. Any other advice, I'll take otherwise thank you for your help - very much appreciated.

The yellow icon means there was a warning in your last update. You can view the log file to see where it came from and look for [WARNG]. Green of course means the update was successful while the red means there was an error. The date on the bottom shows when that icon was last updated, so even if it is green, if the date is 1+ days old (since your update is 1AM) then that is the same as a red logo... the last update was not successful.

I'm not sure why it hung at the 'Downloading' screen. It should quickly respond that it could not download setup data since the MS servers are not there anymore, but there was an earlier post noting the same problem. I haven't been able to reproduce that yet, but I'll see what I can do.
