Lenovo N5902 Mini Keyboard Remote

#1

Post by IT Troll » Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:55 pm

I've just taken delivery of one of these; it is a nice bit of kit and probably worth considering if you are looking to add a mini keyboard to your HTPC.

It is an upgrade to their popular N5901 model and as such has a few improvements over the older version. Most importantly it now has backlight keys, secondly the (rather loose) trackball has been replaced with an optical scanner and partnered with a scroll bar ridge, and finally the glossy black finish of the predecessor is now matt black with a rubberised based.

All in all, this probably makes it the best "one-hander" on the market.

I have the earlier model and have liked it. The upper right of the keyboard tasks (edit - meant to type "takes") deliberate presses to cause the keystroke but not enough of a problem to keep me from considering this new one. Probably will get one in a few weeks. Glad you like it.

I have the older model and I really like having it around. It can sit on the coffee/side table without taking up too much space. The backlit keys are really something that is needed, so good the new model has it. The only thing I don't like is the lack of F (F1, etc) keys. Otherwise, it's great with good range.

here's a good review/intro to it (though it's from lenovo) ... I didn't realize it also had a scroll bar function, very nice.

While we're on the topic of small keyboards, has anyone used this one?
http://www.amazon.com/FAVI-Entertainmen ... 695&sr=8-1

It includes the F keys which would be useful ...

(edit: fixed link)

your link no workie...
just ordered one of the Lenovo remotes.. I'll post my thoughts after I get it in..

Edit: It shipped today 1/20/12. If you order off Lenovo's site it's a decent price and I was even able to select 2 day shipping at no extra charge.. Got it for under $45 shipped. I'll let you guys know how it works in a mini review after I have had it for a few days and can get into using it some. I think this will be the perfect addition to my Harmony one..

I had one of these before the Lenovo. Personally I couldn't get on with the form factor; although it is small it requires two hands to operate making it feel cramped. It has a fixed battery which has to be charged via USB which is a bit of a pain. Finally I found the wireless connection would occasionally drop out at a distance of 10 feet.

The Lenovo uses standard AA batteries and I've had no issues with the wireless.

I am liking it a lot. It performs well and looks great. The lack of function keys is a shame, but I have a full sized keyboard for the serious stuff. The Lenovo is an excellent casual keyboard which is great for those quick IMDB and YouTube sofa surfs.

funny, now that the two threads are combined, your post has created an infinite loop. You could keep someone busy for a long time.

Personally, I wanted a large enough keyboard so that I can actually use it without looking at it (I can type by touch). I bought this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6823191008

The range is OK as long as you plug the adapter in the front of your PC, or use a USB extension cable. It's about the size of a laptop keyboard and it has a touchpad mouse with multi-touch capability, so you can scroll, right-click, etc. all on the touchpad.

The size is perfect for me... just put it on your lap.
