OK I installed the old MKV reg hack we use to use back in the Vista days to get MKV's showing up in WMP11. I can now see my MKV movies in the HD folder in WMP11 but cant play them on the WHS console.

I then went to the XBOX dashboard / video player and in to the HD folder I could now see folders listed with the names of my MKV movies, however when I click in to any of them it says NO VIDEO FOUND. Wonder if I need to install the Haali Splitter on the WHS box?

I installed the Haali Splitter but still cannot play the MKV files in WMP11 on the WHS or on the dashboard. I thought the Haali Splitter had a DirectShow filter for playback in it but maybe not? Might have to install FFDSHOW Tryouts or the Shark Codec on the WHS.

MKV's don't render in Graph Edit on the WHS says have I got a filter installed? or something like that.

I can play the wtv, MC recorded files in WMP11 with no problem. They are all copy freely recordings.
Though there is more work needed with the Xbox, I am glad to see they've spent some time updating it. Hopefully, they aren't finished with it.
I don't have WHS so I can't test that OS but I'll play around a bit more to see what else this new dashboard lets me do. Haven't even fooled with the music side yet.

Kind of strange....turned the unit on tonite and tried everything again and now it plays almost everything, even my .ts files recorded via another program. Even the .wtv files on the non extender enabled box. Maybe turning it off and back on did something????? I did nothing different this time.

MS released some new Video apps but you need Gold to use them.

Any chance that it can now play backed up DVDs (video_ts) files?

To follow up on my kind of dumb question, I found that using this utility: http://mikinho.com/wmc/transcode/ You can get the xbox to show the video_ts files without any transcoding. And they show up in the Movies folder with the cover art but no metadata.
