XBOX 360 - bypass update available message?

#1

Post by droopie » Sun Dec 14, 2014 4:19 am

I bought a used 360 off of CL with no hard drive, but everytime I turn it on it says update available. I have to clear it to go to WMC which works great otherwise. Is there a way to get the 360 to skip checking for updates?

Why not let it update?

Because the last windows update was a complete disaster. How do we know Xbox updates aren't just as bad?

Well, I think updating is the only way to dismiss that message. In the nearly 10 years it has been out I don't remember one causing a problem. Windows Updates have caused many issues and am starting to think it's better to leave them off on a dedicated Media Center system.

I have it installed on all my Xbox 360s; it's fine. It doesn't fuck anything up.

+1 to Ed. I have it installed on all 3 of my 360s. No issues.
I use one of my 360s for gaming and extending - so it gets updated no matter what. Can't play XBLive games online w/o the regular dashboard updates.

I forgot to mention I bought used off CL for $40 with a broken DVD tray and no HD. Can I just stick a USB thumb drive in it and let it update that way?

This is all part of the low buck effort to test WMC and HDHOMERUN prime to make sure I have WAF!

huh?

It updates over the network. You don't need DVD or hard drive to make an XBox 360 be an extender. Just plug it into the network and turn it on, and set it up.

If it needs updates, it will find them over the network. No thumb drive or USB required at all.

Tell that to my Xbox...it says there is no storage space for updates when I try to run them.

I don't know about your update issue, but I got an xbox 360 hard drive for $40. It isn't MS "authorized", and I wanted to play older original xbox games, so I had to perform some magic on the drive (confusing and not easy).

Worked great and saved $$ over an authorized MS hard drive.

Huh. Well, my 4GB XBox 360 Slim with no hard drive--actually, both of them--are humming along and taking updates without any problems.

I bought them both new at the same time and they've done absolutely nothing but be WMC extenders and MS update receptacles...

It's just a PITA when it takes a long time to update when all you want to do is watch TV

I have an older 360 and yes it required storage to download updates. I installed a 16 gig thumb drive into the rear usb port and it has been working great ever since. As a side note my dvd drive also did not work when I bought it off of ebay. after updating it started working so I was quite happy. Good luck!

The only way I know of to bypass the updates is to NOT have any profiles set up at all. I have one xbox 360 that has no profiles on it and it flys straight into WMC extender mode without complaints or anything (then againI only learned this after the 4gb memory on it went corrupt and I was trying to fix it...)

That said I also have an older xbox that I had bought off CL with no HD and I used a free 4GB thumb drive attached to it as the permanent memory. Which also works perfectly fine for picking up updates and running the xbox for day to day use.

I just picked up a tiny 16gb usb thumbdrive and stuck it in the front and the cover closed...so it's not even noticeable. It took a while to do a bunch of updates, but it's working fine. I haven't restarted it again, but hopefully even if there are further updates it will do them too.
