ehshell.exe error - Only when nothing is recording

#1

I know there are a lot of threads about ehshell.exe crashing WMC, and I have tried pretty much every suggestion. My issue however doesn't seem to match anyone else's problem exactly. Here is what's happening.

First of all, my setup involves an Intel i3 (4th gen) running WMC 7 + RecordedTVHD, using Intel graphics, with the TV signal coming from an HDHomeRun Prime. Apart from this issue, it works great.

The problem is, within approximately 5 to 20 minutes of starting a recorded show, it will crash, and back to back errors involving ehshell.exe and ehexthost.exe appear in the Event Logs. (see below) It is usually followed by 2 or 3 subsequent crashes right away after restarting WMC and resuming playback. Eventually it calms down then will go another 10 minutes or so until crashing again. The same thing happens on an XBOX extender. It reports that the PC has disconnected and needs to reconnect, and those two errors appear in the Event Logs.

However, the strange thing is it has NEVER crashed on me if something is currently recording. If I sit down to watch a recorded show, and another show is recording, it doesn't crash. If nothing is recording, it will eventually crash, and when it does I can start something recording, then resume my recorded show, and it's fine. This let be to believe it was some sort of a disk issue, but I have run several tests and can find no evidence that the disk in the HTPC is bad. I've also tried recording to other disks (such as the HTPC's system drive, and an iSCSI volume on a NAS) and the same crashes happened when viewing the recordings.

Playing back videos from the Video Library is fine, it's only Recorded TV. Also I believe Live TV is okay too.

This all started about 2 months ago. I'd been using the same set up fine for many months without any issues. Right around this time I was having a minor unrelated issue and opened the HDHomeRun config program to fix it, and it reported there was a firmware and software update available, so I installed it. It was roughly this time when the errors started happening.

I've tried overnight memtests, hard disk diagnostics, reinstalling .NET, uninstalling RecordedTVHD, removing the Intel graphics driver and trying older versions, resetting Media Center, and as a last resort, completely reinstalling Windows.

I have run out of things to try. The fact that it started around the same time the HDHomeRun updated, and it doesn't crash when the HDHomeRun is actively recording something, makes me think maybe it is the problem, but I can't imagine how. I have a ticket submitted to them, will see what they say, but I thought I would also post here and see if anyone has also experienced this strange issue or might have any ideas for me.

Thanks.
