I was just joking, but yes... it's good for both. Aereo was a nice idea, but I expected this to happen.

I predicted that to happen.barnabas1969 wrote:I was just joking, but yes... it's good for both. Aereo was a nice idea, but I expected this to happen.
I actually don't understand why people have such a resistance to putting up an antenna? Sure, there is a small number of people who can't get OTA, but majority can easily get OTA.

From what I've been told, some people in high rise apartment buildings can't get a good signal even when they are close to the transmitter. I don't know if that's true or not because I've never lived in a big city.
Also, many people don't realize that they can put an antenna on their private balcony, as long as they can find a way to place it without drilling holes in the building (or if they can get permission to drill).
Many also don't realize that there are several products available which can record OTA signals.

Next thing you know Cable Cards will be struck down. Wait a minute, I guess that already happened . I guess TiVo is fighting to ensure it remains availablehttp://pr.tivo.com/press-releases/tivo- ... er-1034638

My cable company provides TiVo boxes, so it looks like TiVo wont need CCards in the future. They will be like Motorola and just be a CableLabs certified STB.

Yeah, but you won't be able to move that non-cable card Tivo from system to system -- I would bet $1000 on it.Polen wrote:My cable company provides TiVo boxes, so it looks like TiVo wont need CCards in the future. They will be like Motorola and just be a CableLabs certified STB.

It's just not practical for a large number of people. People in high-rises or apartments on the wrong side of the building, people who cant run wires to an outside areal without breaking rules, or people who live in hilly cities (like Atlanta) where the roof of their house is nowhere near as tall as the hill across the street. I have a nine-foot VHF antenna in my attic (wired for OTA installation when I built the house) and it picks up exactly squat! Grade B contour my butt.blueiedgod wrote:I actually don't understand why people have such a resistance to putting up an antenna? I used to live in Chicago, and I had to point my antenna at one tower for a certain set of channels, and another for another set of channels. And even then, the signal wasn't perfect. Worse in the bad weather. I was happy to get a clearQAM tuner to bypass all of that and just get reliable channels.

Was that before or after the digital conversion? My area is in a "hole" where analog signals from 30 miles away break up. It was impossible to get a clean analog TV signal back before the digital conversion. I know it doesn't make sense... because radio waves are radio waves... but ever since the digital conversion, TV comes in crystal clear here. I was reluctant to try it because of the terrible reception in the analog days... but it's perfect now.makryger wrote:I used to live in Chicago

This was after the digital conversion. I was right downtown, so it wasn't necessarily distance that was an issue-- just a lot of tall buildings, maybe.

That TIvo has a Cablecard just like all STBs made after 2007 (I think), per FCC rules. There is no approved successor yet, except for a ridiculous waiver granted to Charter for their own downloadable security system.kingwr wrote:Yeah, but you won't be able to move that non-cable card Tivo from system to system -- I would bet $1000 on it.Polen wrote:My cable company provides TiVo boxes, so it looks like TiVo wont need CCards in the future.
