If you weren't trying to keep external clutter to a minimum, The old ATI CC tuners had ATSC capability and RCA/S-Video....

I hate to see anyone have to resort to analog.....

Newfiend,
I have a couple ATI CC tuners I modified for internal. If you wanted one I'd let you have it cheap.

Would It be a better solution to replace the Happauge HD PVR with something like an elegato game capture it had HDMI in and out. Could this be another option?

I never researched these much.. how would I get the DirecTV signal into these and would it work easily with a DirecTV receiver?

It would be analog only, you have better options honestly. I just saw the poster above mine recommend one so thought maybe you had changed your mind on what you were planning.

ah ok, my son posted on my account here about the elegato but I don't think that's an option for WMC..
I'll admit I'm a noob at TV Tuners other than CableCARD. I have a WinTV HVR-1250 with a S-video/Composite input and the Audio input. At this point we just want to get the TV signal into the PC and get TV working. Not worried about HD at them moment. So If I understand this correctly I would run the Composite Video Output on the DTV STB into the Composite/S-Video connector and L&R Audio into the Audio connector on the HVR-1250. Then I would need to run an ir Blaster from the HP ir receiver to the DirecTV Set top box. Is my understanding correct? And any points or tips on setting up Media Center this way?
Thanks,
newfiend~

You got it. Use svideo if you can. Been a long time since I set media center up with a STB. Hopefully it knows the codes for your box.
