What would you do?

So, I bought a new economy laptop from a recently opened local Walmart yesterday. It was a hundred bucks off RRP at $298 + tax. I go through laptops as if they are disposable. I tend to be heavy on them, so cheap works for me.

I grabbed it off the shelf with the big red sticker saying $298 above it. It was piled up with ten or so other laptop boxes.

When I get to the checkout, the price comes up as $707.38 total.

I queried the price and explained its price should be on sale at $298+tax. I pointed at the sale shelf.
The lady called the supervisor and they chatted, ummed a bit then they performed an override and sold it to me for $336.74 all in.

I got home, opened it up, and I have this model:

Should I take it back? Do I keep it? It was their error, so I have been told they will honor the price, is that correct?

At the time of purchase I had no idea it was another model laptop mistakenly put on the sale shelf. The HP boxes are plain and all look the same.

No stickers at ALL on the boxes?

Then neither you nor WM has any idea what's actually INSIDE the boxes???

I dunno. You acted in good faith.

Ask yourself this: what if it were reversed, you bought the $600 unit and got home and opened it up and found the $300 unit. What would you do?

Yeah. I thought so.

Hey, wait a minute: there MUST have been some identifying labels or marks on the boxes. Otherwise, how did the register know to ring it up at $600 instead?

Neither you nor WM bothered to actually look at what you had in your hands--and I'm not talking about opening it up. I'm talking about comparing the label on the box, or the bar code, to what was on the display sign.

Take it back. It was YOUR error. It was also their error in not actually looking at the label on the box and comparing it to the sign, but it was YOUR error.

Take it back.

Oh--and by the way, you're fooling yourself with the $300 laptops. It doesn't matter how hard or lightly you use them, they're ALL disposable. And you've never bothered to see what how a more expensive unit differs. You know all about the price, but nothing at all about the value.

Yeah I'm thinking I will take it back.

Of course there were markings on the box, and part numbers, but the pn's are small and on the sides, I did not read the part number on the box when I picked it up off the shelf. It was in a prime display area where the 'deals' are, with a huge $298 sign in red above. I grabbed one and went to pay.

Do you want to keep the more expensive computer?

Honesty is the best policy. I've done this a few times, and usually they are appreciative enough of the honesty that often times they let you keep it.

Actually adam1991, your comments towards the end of your post erk me somewhat.
I wanted a cheap laptop. That's just what I bought. Whether I know nothing about them or infact if I do, is no concern of yours.
I do have a more expensive laptop. I have one to break and one to treat well.

Well I get to keep it :D

They would loose more money exchanging it for the cheaper model now that it has been opened. They also admitted it was their mistake. They labelled the wrong model at $298 and will honour the price they sold it to me at.

Thanks all for the advice, even grumpy guts lol.

Well done... now you can sleep well at night.

That is, when you're done playing with your new toy.

Hehe :D Yeah it certainly feels like it's made out of pizza boxes and milk cartons.
The chassis is REALLY flexible. One drop on a hard surface and this thing will explode into a thousand pieces I'm sure.
It runs like the stink! I just threw a Solid3 SSD into it.
