Xbox 360 and zoom option issue

I ran into an issue with my Xbox360 as an extender. When watching live TV, I can go into the options to change the zoom. But if I'm watching recorded TV, I can pull up the options, but can't right arrow over to zoom. It just fast forwards. Kind of stinks because my older SD recordings have black bars all the way around them. Is that just a drawback or is there a work around? Thanks for any help!
