Hmmm... I can't find it on the McAfee site now either. It was there not long ago. Where did you find the PCWorld article?alphatango wrote:I could not find the Consumer Products removal tool anywhere, is this a critical step or can I pass. A pcworld article said this was a defunct tool.

Ah, here's the link. It is still on McAfee's website, and has instructions and the link to download the tool:

If you remember the great Linksys debacle of a couple of years back, every time you power on a Linksys extender and go to connect it phones home.
To prevent this, with the unit powered up, go to the settings and change network under DNS to 0.0.0.0 for both entries. This will prevent it from trying to get a connection. (this was the work around when Cisco shut off the server one Friday afternoon and left on a long weekend holiday). The server is back on, but this occurs from a power up condition and just as an added protection setting the DNS to 0.0.0.0 will prevent an attempt at a connection, it'll time out and the extender will not fail.
I don't remember the unnamed window error, but the timing is about right from connection to shut down.

The system has been running fine until today. I installed iTunes and Windows Movie Maker this morning, and this evening when I boot up the extender, I'm getting this again in the Application log:teeces wrote:FYI, I formatted & reinstalled Windows 7 on the media center PC, and the extender now connects with no problem, and no error messages in the event log.
Code: Select all
The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because a composited theme is not in use
Code: Select all
The Media Center Extender user was abruptly disconnected.
The experience on the extender is the same as before: It boots up, connects, and shows the main menu screen, then immediately freezes and does not respond to the remote. After 20 or 30 seconds, it disconnects.

Try uninstalling iTunes and Movie Maker to see if the problem goes away.
