WD40EZRX as TV recording drive?

#1

Post by BerMM » Wed Jan 01, 2014 2:39 pm

I have a HTPC with an infinitv 4 pcie and an unused hauppage 2250 (until I get an outdoor antenna, thanks comcast!) and I recently replaced the 1.25TB tv recording drive with a 4TB Western Digital. I now see that ceton is recommending 7200rpm drives, but I can't seem to find a straight answer on what this WD40EZRX spins at. Does anyone know how many tuners it should handle, and how many extenders I could have? The rest of the system is an A10-5700 with 8GB 1866 and a 120GB hyperx 3k for Windows 7 x64.

Thanks!

I just found this on Amazon.com...

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-G ... B00EHBEUZO

Looks like it's 5400rpm.

5400RPM drives will really be okay for even six tuners and then some. That info shouldn't be adhered to. Modern 5400RPM drives have a lot of throughput.

I have an Infinitv4 that I record 4 shows at once on my 3tb WD green drive and I have no problems at all.

Thanks everyone.

I also found this: http://hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-1585100.html which agrees withthe advice here. So it isn't a problem throughput wise, but what will happen if I have a Xbox 360 extender interrupting things?

I suppose the worst case scenario is that I have to either lighten the load by removing the hauppage, or save up for another WD40EZRX and stripe them. I suppose then I'd have enough space to rip and archive my blurays.

A "green" drive will handle your setup just fine. I have a 2TB Western Digital green drive as my recording media. I've had 3 recordings running while watching a recorded show on my XB360 extender - No issues to report. The 'read' request from your extender won't tax that drive much at all.
If I recall, there was someone on here who reported recording 6 channels at once to a green drive with no issue. So, I think you'll be safe with a "slower" drive.

I have been using WD Green 3 and 4TB drives as my main Recorded TV drive with two Ceton InfiniTV4 PCIe (8 tuners) and more recently with a InfiniTV 6 ETH (4+6 /10)never had issues with RECORDINGING max HD shows.

However, at max recording, I did see short to long lags when advancing past commercials while watching back TV on my Xbox Media Center Extender. I also have my Windows 8.1 OS on an SSD to keep the two functions separate.

When I upgraded to a Kaveri APU this past week I did purchase a new WD 4TB Black drive at Newegg to give my Cetons some added cushion.
