I commented on how the article starts out being about "replace your cableco equipment" but then digresses into complaints about how "but WMC can't stream ripped movies well to extenders!".
If you're going to discuss replacing cableco equipment, then discuss replacing cableco equipment. Since cableco equipment can't store or stream ripped movies all throughout the house, why does everyone insist on discussing that at all, let alone allow their focus to go there?
I spent liberally when I built my WMC setup--I didn't know what I was doing, and didn't really limit myself as I learned--and I've just about broken even against paying for cableco equipment, with the additional benefit of having commercial skip plus a system that can play Netflix as well as Amazon rentals.

It streams them just fine, as long as you are using the right codecs. Sure it does not fully support MKV's.adam1991 wrote:I commented on how the article starts out being about "replace your cableco equipment" but then digresses into complaints about how "but WMC can't stream ripped movies well to extenders!".
We have 4x Linksys Extenders and a phat XBOX360. If I get a movie or program in MKV, or other unsupported format, I just run it through Any Video Converter to convert it to XVID and MP3 audio. Plays great on Linksys, even allows 30 second forward and 10 second reverse skip. I usually just set up a task and let it do its thing before I move the content from my desktop to the "DVR"
My kids' 10 minute cartoons were about 200 MB as MKV/AC3, and are 300 MB as XVID/MP3. Storage is cheaper than replacing extenders.

that may be, but the cableco equipment can't do it at all.
And yet, people kept trying to use the "but WMC can't stream my ripped movies!" as a reason WMC sucks, or doesn't work, or isn't a replacement for cableco equipment, or...
