My Media Center on the same PC as the server

#1

Post by johnb263 » Mon Oct 28, 2013 3:39 am

Apologies if this has been addressed already - I would like to run the windows 8.1 app on the same PC as the MMC server. I have win 8.1, installed the beta server and installed the app. (all on the same computer). But the app will not connect to the server, no matter how I try to set it up. I cannot get the server to respond through a web page (in my case I tried 192.168.0.7:5832). I can get the server to respond if I try through a ipad, and I can get information on the server from the Ipad, but I cannot get any recorded tv to play on the ipad either.

So, my question is, can somebody point me to some procedure to set up MMC and the app on the same win8.1 pc? I saw the HOWTO post in greenbutton, but that does not solve the issue - I downloaded and checked the loopback for the app and it is enabled...

Thanks!

First, read the thread at the link below to enable the app to run on the same PC where the MMC services are installed.
http://www.thegreenbutton.tv/forums/vie ... =64&t=4352

Second, the My Media Center app does not support playing video. It is only used to remotely schedule recordings, view information about the recordings/guide, and to control the playback of live/recorded TV on the host PC and extenders.

Thanks for the reply, as I mentioned, I already followed the HOWTO guide. I checked that loop back is enabled , and it is. Beyond that I used the host pc's IP address, port 5832, login name and password, without any luck. So I was asking for some more info on this. I'm sure the howto guide was written in response to other posts, these are the ones I'm looking for. Or, if someone went through this , maybe some help.

Second, on the "My mc" iPad app, on any recorded program, there is a "watch now" button. Click it, and it will show "playback will start momentarily" but nothing happens for me.

Try using the IP address for the loopback adapter. That's 127.0.0.1 (or "localhost").

Also, the instructions at that link refer to Windows 8, not 8.1. Maybe something has changed? It's possible that something has changed in 8.1. Google?

Sorry... I missed the 2nd part of your post. The "Watch now" button will start playback on your PC or extender. It does not play on the tablet/phone or in the Win8 app. For it to start on the PC, Media Center must already be running (the app won't start Media Center for you). For it to start on an extender, the extender must already be turned on, and running Media Center.

Sorry. Maybe Motz can help you. I don't have the app installed on Win8... only Android.

I recommend that you should add a post to Motz's thread. That way, he will be notified of a new post and he may come to help you. You may want to ask if his method of enabling loopback still works in 8.1.

I would've replied to the original HOWTO guide - if I could figure out how - I think it's locked or something. Keep in mind I'm new here - :D
I've send him a message

No I only tried my local IP. I did not set up or try outside access...

Oh, you're right. Sorry, I didn't notice that it was locked.

Can you first verify this:

Open up a browser on another PC in the house and type in:

http://<ip of HTPC>:5832

<ip of HTPC> is the IP of the PC that shows up in the MMC config

You should see a message:
My Media Center services are running properly. Nothing to see here ... move along... move along.

Now try this on the same PC that you are running the services and see if that message also comes up.

Also I see that you changed the Port you are running on. Is there a reason for that? try to reset everything to the defaults of 5832.
I Write, Code, and Tweet

Hi Motz, the ports are set to 5832 - the post above was in error (mine). I've tried http://192.168.0.7:5832 on safari (ipad) - works (with the message you mention), Mozilla on the pc where I installed the services (worked as well, with some html code included), and internet explorer (no luck). So I think the problem is with windows 8.1 and IE 11.
I've made sure the port number is set up right in both the my media center setup app and the initial configuration for the pc where I want to connect to in the my media center app. Still get the message " unable to connect to pc, please check your internet connection and password and try again". my password is the same as my user name password to log into the pc. I have admin previlege's.
any ideas? I've spend $10 so far for the apps, would like to get it to work.
Thanks

The secret is to leave the password field blank in the connection setup.
Now that I have it working :-
1. Playing a movie does not resume from the last position
2. Cannot do a search in the guide specifying only categories (like movies) to schedule recordings -
Or do I still have problems?
