Right hand side charms>settings>change pc settings>update and recovery
from there if you go to advanced i think you can boot into a recovery console and create/apply a disc image.
on my phone so that might not be exact! Sorry...

Thanks for the reply, but I don't have an "Update and Recovery" under PC settings. I have "Windows Update" and "General" and "Sync your settings" but nothing that suggests "Update and Recovery." I did manage to get to the Windows 7 File Recovery tool through a link on the "File History" page and made an image backup of the SSD. Of course, being that it was made with the "Windows 7" Recovery tool, I don't know how effective it will be on restoring Windows 8 if I have a crash.

That's the exact place you want to be. I have done it multiple times, backing up and recovering. They just probably forgot to rename it :) v8.2 will fix that I'm sure.

We are definitely talking about the same spot, but I have different menu items once I get there. Are you already on Windows 8.1, because I am still on 8.0?

So it's been ten days now, and I guess I thought there would be tons of people experience my same problem and same error code and workarounds by now. Anyone know if Microsoft has 1) acknowledged lots of upgrade problems and/or 2) has any plans to address them or provide some diagnostic tool to determine what is causing the upgrade to fail or what the codes mean?

Kingwr - you have never said what errors you are getting. There is no broad issue with 8.1 upgrade, across my colleagues at work we have done hundreds of upgrades on many different configs. Only issues we have seen are done networking issues when HyperV switch is install on the 8.1 host AND you have certain peculiar VPN software installed. Break network but uninstall of 3rd party net components OR disabling virtual adapter offloads fixes. What's you error set? Did you try running setup multiple times to see if it gets further each time?

I get error code: 0x8007002C - 0x4000D. I have tried approx. 7 times now, disconnecting all USB hardware, uninstalling software, uninstalling all metro apps, updating drivers, installing updates, and taking out an IEEE-1394 card. I get the same error at the same place: It gets to "Setting Up a few more things 72%" and pauses for 3 or 4 minutes. I think it is checking the disks. It then jumps to 78% and immediately fails. Same place every time. When you hit enter, it reboots and restores the previous version, then gives the "Sorry, couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1" message with the above error code. I have posted this to Microsoft Answers forum but to no avail. Nothing useful on Google for the error code either.

My hardware is 2 or 3 years old - i5-2500K, 8 GB RAM, Gigabyte MB, AMD Radeon HD 6900, OCX Agility3 SSD, and Seagate Baracuda HDD

Ok, I finally solved it. I had a symbolic link for C:\Users\Public (on SSD) to D:\Public. Remove the symbolic link Windows 8.1 installed.

Glad you solved it!

for the record my upgrade resulted in all scheduled recording disappearing 9may be related to having used custom tools in past), needing to reinstall all plugins, needed to repair ceton drivers and ceton otay error message.

all-in-all about 1 hour from first reboot to everything working
