He has a free version without the live tv support. That's the one I actually use, and I think it works pretty well. You can still do live tv, albeit delayed, as described above. You can choose the stream quality, so if you drop a connection you can always restart it at a lower setting if needed.

The server software has always been free.

I like my roku 3 a lot. I have been using it a lot to watch shows on amazon and hulu. I cant find anything good to watch on cable anymore. its 100% reality shows now:( I like my echo to but I don't like the remote.

The author also has taken over development and does support live tv with an updated server:

Okay-- THIS is NICE. Just removed my old remote potato install and reinstalled with the updated installer from the author's site. Loaded up the free version of the app and it works WAY better than anything else I've tried on my Galaxy S4. I'm going to actually but this app and see how liveTV plays. Would be nice to know if the Roku can access this stream-- anyone know?
Matt O. ...tivo what? ...dish dvr--uh... huh? ...cable dvr fees--you're kidding, right?

I've always wondered how well the LiveTV app works. I have never used RemotePotato before either. I'd like to hear your findings on this app.

What about this now after the recent Echo announcement?
