WMC screen goes black, Error message pops up to close/restart/try to find solution/etc. It's happened a few times... If I look at the app logs I see this:

This is my main HTPC running Win7 64bit, with all current service packs and updates. It has MS Visual Studio C++ 2010 x86 installed.

Should I install C++ SP1? or re-install v2010 x86? or install v2010 x64? or v2012 x86? or v2012 x64?

What is C++ used for in WMC? Maybe Guide updates? or My Channel Logos? or DTBAddin/Comskip? or Extenders?

As you have the 64-bit version of Win7, I would try to reinstall the 64-bit version of the Microsoft C++ Runtime, downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=14632

According to the release notes "The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package installs runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2010 installed".
I'm assuming you don't actually have Visual Studio 2010 installed, as this is only needed for developing your own software.

Correct, I don't develop any software. Yes it's only the runtime redistribute pack.

I actually found what triggers the crash:
I have all my sources, including this HTPC, running through an Onkyo AVR via hdmi then one hdmi into my 55" Tv. When I power off the Onkyo, the hdmi connection is lost for a split second then comes back (I can see a little red x on the hdmi audio notification icon pop up then go away). Then when I power the Onkyo back on it does this again. Same thing occurs when toggling power on the Tv. I can reproduce the WMC crash by powering the Onkyo or the Tv off and/or back on.

I already have the latest Firmware on the Onkyo.

I have tried nVidia drivers v320.49 & v320.18. I have a feeling trying other versions won't help.

I guess I will try 64bit C++ runtime but I have a feeling it won't help.

This is a major issue because this HTPC is supposed to be replacing the Tivo in my living room. It needs to run live tv 24/7. I absolutely cannot have WMC crashing every time I power cycle my Tv or AVR.

I think you're right that the C++ runtime won't help here.

I had a similar problem when powering cycling my amp, except in my case it was the HDMI Audio Driver that crashed, resulting in a picture but no sound until I rebooted the Media Center PC. For me the fix was to install a Gefen HDMI Detective device -- expensive but very effective. YMMV. Details at http://www.gefen.com/kvm/ext-hdmi-edidp ... od_id=8005

Yep, I think that's where I'm headed. Here is a similar device that I may be ordering-
http://www.hdfury.com/products/dr-hdmi-specs/

$99 shipped from Taiwan in 2 days!
Plug & Play - one button copy EDID from "display".
Works perfect - PC doesn't know when I power cycle the Tv/AVR.
