I need a new TV screen to replace my 50" plasma(its going 'on-the-fritz' after 5+ years of heavy use)...always attracted to something alittle different, so...
Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum Series Smart LED TV 58PFL9956T http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbi ... FL9956T/12
and
VIZIO 21:9 Cinemawide Class Razor LED Smart Theater 3D TV XVT3D580CM http://www.vizio.com/cinemawide/overview
...those are two 58" 2.37:1 aspect screens that were on the market, that could of closely matched the 2.40:1 aspect 1920×800 res of Blu-ray disc format....for media available in our 'home use', I'm guessing that "Blu-ray quality" is about the max we will have for the next few years...I found very little 'programming' @ full 1080p 1920×1080 thus with a "HD" 16:9 aspect, and more commonly 720p 1280×720 and 1080i HDTV and a lot of 720×480 DVD level of quality in that current "full wide screen" format...so I feel that a 1920×1080 screen is not an absolute necessity for a standard...I did just fine with my 720p plasma 16:9 screen for years, but now the dreaded top and bottom "black bars" are coming back into my life again
...more and more of the movies in my collection are in a "cinemascope/panavision" aspect...even noticing that with some of the liveTV movies I'll watch; either they are old enough to be 'preserved' in cinemascope, and/or just shown by snooty program directors in a "how it was designed to be seen" extra wide theater aspect
so I'm assuming only "made for TV" will ever really embrace 16:9 ? and I never was a huge fan of any made for TV programming(which seems to be getting much worse lately; tho now with larger budgets, mainstream film stars, unlimited digital efx, and with all the writers leaving 'print media' must be looking for jobs there too...why so bad?) etc. etc.
bottom line is:
should I pursue hunting down one of those odd ball super wide screen TV sets that were never accepted by the market? (think I can find one on eBay for under $1300)
...or will I be happier watching Life of Pi on a good 'ol 60"+ 16:9 HDTV (likely with 60" or bigger, a 2.40:1 aspect image could be physically wider/bigger than on one of those 58" 2560 × 1080 screens)
and note that I did test a 21:9 aspect with Media Center Win8; using my Sony GDM-FW900 16:10 CRT, I set a 2100 × 900 resolution, and Zoom 1 put BluRay full screen with no black bars 16:9 HDTV had side bars, and Zoom 4 would 'smart stretch' HDTV and anamorphic 16:9 DVDs to super wide...but has anyone actually used one of those super wide `Scope TV sets with WMC ?

For PQ quality alone may I recommend the Samsung PNxxF8500 PDP. It's traditional HD screen ratio but has excellent blacks and brightness should you need it.

ugh, I still love my Sony Trinitron CRT's for my massive desktop PC I'm rocking(two CPD-G520p's one on each side of a GDM-FW900) and absolutely insisted on not getting a washed out dead looking candy-ass colored LCD back in the day I bought my awesome Plasma screen, as well as need the deepest darkest black levels with proper gradation smooth stepping collaboration all the way to clear whites in a subtlety lit viewing room....I don't want another plasmaSTC wrote:.... hehe, you don't need a dim room for this one. It goes very bright. It can easily hit +55fL calibrated

my last plasma TV caused the contact lenses I wear as part of my human disguise to permanently affix themselves to my eyes...so now I cant return home... I hope you will understand that this is why I'm fine with getting an LCD now
